American C-124 “Globemasters,” the jumbo aircraft of their time, unloading Americans and their equipment at Da Nang on February 5, 1954. Note the front-opening bay doors that enabled the C-124 to carry vehicles and other large items of equipment. The United States used C-124s regularly on flights from the Philippines (Clark Air Force Base) to Saigon (Tan Son Nhut), on this special lift to Da Nang, and at least a few times to Haiphong (Cat Bi). At the height of the battle of Dien Bien Phu, President Eisenhower approved the use of C-124s to carry reinforcements directly from France to Da Nang. Photograph courtesy Russell De Somer
