April

Tues 2 April

Peg has spent the whole afternoon crying over my shoulder, between one customer and the next, because of Andrew’s silence. I’m not exactly a bunch of laughter myself and I’m missing Remy like mad but at least I’m not so lachrymose (another of Robert’s fancy words). Well, I suppose she has plenty of reasons to be so, with her mother on her back all the time, telling her not to make such a spectacle of herself.

However, I think that Peg is far too clingy and that might have put Andrew off. That and, of course, Batty Betty’s meddling.

And, talking about Auntie Betty, she is looking rather smug and also odder than usual. Her eyes seem to be darting in all directions and she has taken to whispering in Doug’s ears. What on earth is going on?

The fake letter from Mr. Cribbles had its effect on Betty and she took her “mission” very seriously. She had always been one for snooping and now she could do it with a sense of pride. Unfortunately, she wasn’t very subtle and people started to notice her odd behavior. Also, whenever she came across Cribbles she would look at him intently and occasionally even winked at him, which probably confused him. People started to suspect an interest on her part, to the point that some busybody customer asked me if there was a romance going on there.

I’m sad and I desperately miss Remy but I can’t and won’t be a cry baby. In fact, I spend a lot of time trying to comfort Peg who is terribly upset by Andrew’s behavior.

Maybe this coming Saturday our soldier boys will re-appear together, Remy for his bath and Andrew for Peg.

The day of Betty’s secret meeting came and Robert sprung his trap. She went to the room where the unsuspecting Mr. Cribbles was drafting the agenda for the War Committee meeting. As she entered and closed the door Robert, who had gotten hold of the key and was laying in waiting, silently locked it behind her. I don’t know what passed between the two of them but, when later they tried to get out of the room, they found themselves trapped and no amount of effort could make the darn door open.

They both wanted to get out before anybody came, to avoid being found in a ridiculous but embarrassing situation and they tried their best. The upshot of it was when the Committee ladies arrived and unlocked the door with the key that Robert had thoughtfully put back in its place, they found both of them red in the face and somewhat disheveled from their efforts to break the door down. Of course, the ladies jumped to the wrong conclusions—some were scandalized, others giggled and Harriet Mandeville, eyes brimming with
