I woke up on a pile of coats. I couldn’t really remember falling asleep on a pile of coats, but I must have, because that’s where I woke up.

“Sander?”

Adrian and Filip were standing over me.

“Are you okay?” Adrian said.

“I’m fine,” I said and sat up. I was actually feeling a lot better. “What time is it?”

“It’s midnight.”

We were supposed to be home by midnight. The only reason my mum had let Adrian come was because he was with me. Lucky him. How would he ever get by without me around, puking in vases and sleeping on coats?

I looked around the room and saw that people were leaving.

“Party’s over,” Filip said. “We should get out of here.”

A couple of guys asked me if I could move so they could get their coats.

I got up. “Where is Niklas?”

Filip shrugged. “I think he’s off somewhere with Sofia.”

“Right,” I said.

But the next thing I knew Niklas had bounced back into the room.

“Hey, losers!” He grinned. “Oh nice to see you’re awake, Sander. Hey, I thought you were a vampire, not Sleeping Beauty.”

Some people laughed as they picked up their coats by my feet.

“Funny,” I said. “Let’s get out of here.”

When we got outside I untied my cape and threw it in the wheelie bin. The fangs were long gone. I had no idea what had happened to them. I checked my phone. There were no texts or calls from Mum, and Adrian hadn’t heard anything either. I couldn’t decide if this was worrying or comforting.

“Man,” Niklas said as we walked down the street. “That was some party.” He patted my back. “Too bad you missed most of it.”

We said goodbye to Filip at his place and Niklas continued to walk with us, even though this was a detour to his house.

“Where were you all night anyway?” Adrian asked him.

“Upstairs with Sofia.” He smiled. “In her bedroom.”

“You were not in her room,” I said.

He turned to me. “Okay, Sleeping Beauty. What the hell do you know about where I was or not?”

“I just know you were not in her room,” I said, because I had no other argument whatsoever.

“What’s the matter with you? You want proof or something?”

I scoffed. “What are you going to do? Show us the condom in your wallet again?”

He grinned. “Maybe I don’t have it any more.” And then, I swear to God, he actually winked, and I wanted to puke all over again.

Adrian immediately took the bait, with a bunch of “No way”s and “Tell me more, tell me more”. But Niklas just grinned and said to use his imagination.

I didn’t believe Niklas for one second, but I was getting really annoyed. It was one thing to lie about some imaginary girl on his phone – lying about Sofia was a different story.

Niklas was quiet for a second, then he said, “Her room is really cool. She has all these old vinyl records all over her wall.”

I stopped. Just for a second. He had been in her room.

But that didn’t mean that anything had happened.
