Eloise would have visited a hundred art galleries if it meant spending time with Dianah. The ferry ride to the island, Dianah was completely invested in the view and gave Eloise an opportunity to study her. There was a smile on her face, the wisps of unbound hair were flailing in the wind, and she appeared the most relaxed Eloise had ever seen her. As she stared at Dianah, she wished this weekend wouldn’t end. Four times she’d seen Anna in person, and that wasn’t nearly enough. As the ferry approached Magnetic Island, Eloise couldn’t help but feel a sense of craving. She had only spent a short amount of time with Dianah in person, but their friendship felt timeless, and Eloise would do anything for more time together. Dianah was such easy company.

Eloise couldn’t help from stealing glances at Dianah reminding herself she was really here. She was and it made her heart race and her cheeks flush. Dianah caught her staring more than once and raised an eyebrow at her when she was sprung for the hundredth time swooning like a love-struck teen. Dianah moved closer and took Eloise’s hand in hers, which was enough to make Eloise check out of everything going on around her, focusing entirely on Dianah’s hand in hers.

“This is beautiful.”

“Huh?” Eloise said. Eloise could swear she heard Dianah laughing under her breath.

“This,” Dianah said, gesturing to the very obvious view of the bay below them.

“Oh,” Eloise said, genuinely surprised and having no recollection of the walk up here. “It’s beautiful.”

“Yes, it is.”

Eloise glanced at Dianah to find her blue eyes on her. She flushed from tip to toe.

Dianah squeezed her hand and they continued to explore the island, taking in the stunning views and enjoying each other’s company. They laughed, shared stories, and even had the messiest burger Eloise had ever eaten on the beach. It was a perfect day, and Eloise couldn’t have asked for anything more. Back on the ferry, Dianah seemed lost in her thoughts once again. Eloise couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in her mind or if she’d done anything to make Dianah distance herself. Dianah certainly wouldn’t be the first person to do so, but the look on Dianah’s face made Eloise want to comfort her, not arc up and put up her own wall to save herself from getting hurt. Dianah looked torn.

Unable to contain her curiosity any longer, Eloise gently placed her hand on Dianah’s arm. “Hey, are you okay?” she asked softly. Dianah looked over at her, her eyes filled with a mixture of emotions.

She gave Eloise a wan smile. “Not really, no. I don’t want this weekend to end,” Dianah admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Eloise’s heart skipped a beat. “Me neither. I wish I could see you every day.”

Dianah smiled, a calm, almost hopeful look crossing her face. “Really?” she asked.

“You’re my best friend,” Eloise said.

Dianah’s smile dulled a touch and Eloise squeezed her arm, wondering what she’d done to cause it.
