CHAPTER 21

Sebastian

Sebastian had a grin on his face the entire drive to Las Vegas.

Not only did he love a good paparazzi-thwarting adventure, but he loved that Maggie was so willing to join him.

He also loved that instead of freaking out about the photos, she put together a plan and her first instinct was to protect him.

I love Maggie.

There was no denying it, and, honestly, he didn’t see a point in trying. So what if they’d only known each other a few weeks. When it came to love, there were no rules.

Sebastian was quite sure that Maggie Maguire was his soulmate and that their paths were destined to cross. They were meant to be together and that’s why being together came so easy for them.

She was typing away on her laptop while he drove. They stopped for ice cream and gas in Barstow and then took another bathroom break in Baker, where he kissed her deeply behind the world’s largest thermometer. They took pictures, too. They took dozens of pictures at each rest stop, some of each other and lots of them together.

Before they left Baker, they stopped at the little shop that proudly proclaims it has the best beef jerky on the planet. It’s also the self-proclaimed gateway to UFOs and Area 51, which all makes perfect sense.

They stood outside the car, enjoying stretching their legs before the next leg of their drive. Sebastian showed Maggie a picture of the two of them on his patio, her arms around his neck and the Pacific Ocean in the background.

“I’d like to start with this one. I’ve been thinking about it, and I think the caption should be simple but powerful,” he told her. “I’d like it to say ‘my girl’ and nothing else.”

Maggie’s cheeks turned a beautiful shade of red, rivaling the hair on her head. “I think that’s very simple and powerful,” she agreed. She sniffed suddenly, turning away from him and pretending to look at the fake UFO parked on top of the building.

“Sweetheart?” When she didn’t respond, Sebastian stepped around her and gently pulled her sunglasses from her face. There were tears in her eyes. “Oh sweetheart,” he murmured, pulling her close. He appreciated that the parking lot was practically empty and that the few people walking out of the UFO shop and the nearby diner paid them no mind. “You’re my girl, Maggie, and not only do I want the whole world to know, but I want to be the one to tell them. I want to silence any speculation and make it clear that you are mine. Mine. Because I love you.”

The tears spilled down her cheeks, unbidden.

Sebastian held his breath now that all of his cards were on the table. Maggie hadn’t been lying about her poker face; tears aside, she gave nothing away.

“I love you, too, Sebastian. I love you so much, it scares me,” she whispered.

He smiled broadly, holding her tight. “I’ve wanted to say that to you for a while now. I
