Chapter 6

Her Eminence is likely dealing with Kevin this very moment, calling him by his most secret name, which is going to hurt even more after his absence. He is either going to get reassigned to another guard post or he's going to be returned to his post with higher supervision. If the latter, he'll have to face the mockery of his fellow guards, for escaping or for having gotten caught, depending on where they hold their honor.

Del has blood on her forehead, and when Saira touches the damp towel she had retrieved to the spot, Del winces. It's mostly dried blood that washes away, and she has a bump forming, but the cut is no longer bleeding.

Del's ankles are worse. Saira focuses on applying bandages, and if she uses a little healing magic with her wound-dressing, there's no one to call her out on it. Del might not even notice, and there's no specific rule about using magic within sight of humans when they've already witnessed it. When Del was able to see it in the first place, without aid.

Saira slides her hands around the back of Del's leg, cupping her calf. She looks up and Del is looking down at her, eyes wide, bottom lip between her teeth.

Saira has no one to blame, not Kevin or keeping secrets or maintaining disguises, when she slides her hand up over the back of Del's knee, fingers stretching for underside of her thigh, sliding slowly for the expanse of the top of her leg, tantalizingly bare except for her boxer briefs.

"Does blood turn you on?" Del asks. It's meant to be light, Saira can hear it, and she can hear where it falters into something more exposed.

"In certain circumstances," Saira says, dropping the towel and settling her other hand on Del's legs, so she's crouched between her knees, hands on her thighs. She wants to spread her open. This is very dangerous, the want coursing through her. Is this the same kind of desire that pulled Kevin out of his world and into the human one? To consume? To be filled up with the magnetic pull of the taste of humans?

If Saira wants to bite the inside of Del's thighs, is that the same desire, to travel to a place she is not meant to be, where she's not welcome, where all she'll cause is disaster?

"Does blood turn you on?" she asks Del. She really should pull away, stand up, sever her ties with this human, whose mouth is still a ghostly memory against her own.

"No," Del says, "No, it isn't the blood that turns me on."

Saira presses her lips to the inside of Del's thigh, a generous amount higher than her knee.

The sound Del makes is barely held back behind her tightly closed lips.

"I am not how I appear right now," Saira says, pressing an almost-kiss to the opposite thigh.

"Yeah, I saw that earlier."

That brings Saira up short. "What did you see?" She can't look up at Del, and it
