The partner pairings were listed at the bottom of the letter. I scanned the names, looking for my own.

“Dylan Smith and . . . and Joe Turner,” I read. I sighed. “I guess you and I won’t be partners.”

Robby folded his letter. “My partner is someone named Kevin,” he said.

He looked disappointed for a minute, but then he smiled. “My team will win!” he said. “We’ll leave you and Joe in the dust!”

I frowned. “How do you know? You’ve never even met Joe,” I told him.

“I don’t have to,” said Robby. “I’m the best.”
