Chapter 25

Ross was instructing one of the hands about the proper care of the horses when Ambrose called his name from across the yard. Ross turned to see him standing with Maybelle. As Ross approached, Ambrose said to him, “My daughter here needs to be run into town. New dresses for … some visitors we’ll be expecting.” Ross glanced at Maybelle, and her discomfort was evident. He didn’t need to ask anything more about it. Ambrose went on, “Normally I’d go with her, take care of business in town. But Maybelle generally takes care of Rosie on such jaunts, and she needs to try on these dresses, you see. In any case, I think I should like to spend some time alone with Rosie, it’s … it’s been too long, and life is short, is it not?”
