Chapter Thirty-seven

First, though, Emma and Suri refilled the filter bottles. They also found two packs of decent hoagie rolls, not yet stale. Levi, Apollo, and I scooped up our gear; then we blew out the doors together. We all got outside to Suri’s pickup just in time.

Obbie and Mateo were huddled around one of the pumps, peering up into the nozzle of its hose.

“Seriously, my dad told me…” Mateo was arguing.

“The race car driver?” Obbie poked.

“Whatever, man. You can get the gas started with suction. Suck. Like on any tube. Hold it below the source. When it starts flowing, then quick, shove it into the tank.”

“Wait, then why don’t people who need gas do that, like, every day?”

“Well, for one thing there’s guards.” Mateo waved at the cashier’s booth. “Those guys. And for another, they’re locked at night.”

“Got it. And they didn’t lock it whenever they ran out of here?”

“It’s a war,” Mateo reasoned. “You’ve seen…everybody’s in a hurry.”

“Okay, so the gas cap is open. What do we do first?”

“I guess, just suck…”

“What, are you nuts?” we shrieked at them.

Apollo and I wrestled the thick rubber hose away before either of them actually put their lips down on the nozzle.

Mateo pulled up short, a little flustered, but still ready to do that crazy thing. “We need gas, guys. Super really need it.”

“You’ll get poisoned,” I reminded them, alarmed.

“This is how they do it, in the movies.”

“Uh-uh. That’s from a car tank. With a garden hose. Not these filthy things.” I wacked the side of the pump. GasTV leapt to life again.

“If YOU love mixed martial arts, you’ve come to the right place. GasTV has more fights, more fans, more results! The Korean Zombie takes on, you guessed it, the one and only Break’em Bones Jones. Right here.”

“Pfffh!” Emma exhaled. “It’s the end of the world, and we still have to watch Ultimate Fighting?”

Mateo and Obbie kept quibbling with us.

“So what’s your great idea, then?” Mateo taunted.

Levi just walked up to the pump. Shoved in sixty bucks that we had borrowed from the Mama’s Chicken cash register. And loaded the nozzle into the truck’s tank. The brawlers shut up mad fast.

“Smooth,” Obbie said. I could tell he meant it as a compliment.

Pretty soon we were on our way. Five of us squeezed inside the SuperCab with Suri driving. Emma hung with me and Obbie in the truck bed in back. Everybody’s stuff was secured around us with the retractable cable lock. We could go a good five hundred miles until we had to find more gas. Sacramento was only a couple of hours away. Our target was the huge wilderness sporting goods store there. Plus, to find a hot spot where we could pick up Justice’s new advice.

“How’d you guys get all the way to Los Banos, anyway?” Emma asked, as we charged up the highway. “That’s, like, seventy miles from Fresno.”

“We rolled.”

“Wait.” Obbie stopped me. “You skated all the way here?”

“From camp — half of it was straight downhill.”

“On your boards?”

“Yup.
