Chapter Ten

When Mitch woke up the next morning, it was to an empty bed with the covers twisted around his legs and his bare ass hanging out uncovered. He looked around, confused for a moment at the strange surroundings before he remembered that this was the guest room, Hunter’s room.

As he lay there in bed, listening to the morning song of chirping birds outside, he replayed last night in his head. After a bit of rest after the first round, he and Hunter had sex again, not stopping until it was almost morning and they had passed out in an exhausted heap.

Which was probably why he didn’t wake up when Hunter left the room. Even though he had the enhanced senses of a bear, he was still just a man, a man worn out by too much mind-blowing sex.

Mitch buried his head in Hunter’s pillow and took a big whiff. Even though the pillow was cold, his mate’s scent was still heavy in the fabric. The alchemy of their combined smells was intoxicating, the best kind of natural high.

He was still on a high when he came downstairs to the kitchen to find Hunter having breakfast with Craig and Lizzy. Craig probably heard everything last night. Nope, this wasn’t awkward at all…

“Morning,” he said. He poured a cup of coffee and pushed it over toward him.

“Thanks.” Mitch was somewhat soothed by the coffee. He looked over at Hunter and saw that his face was as red as the sliced tomatoes in his omelet. So he wasn’t the only one who had trouble with the morning after. Hunter’s lips quirked upwards into a tiny smile and Mitch grinned back shyly.

Thankfully Craig was merciful enough to ignore the fact that they were both blushing like virgin brides after their wedding night. “Dave called this morning. He spent all night going over the security footage.”

“What did he find?” Mitch was eager to get to the bottom of this mystery so he could squish the perpetrator like a bug.

Craig shrugged and bounced Lizzy on his knee. “Nothing much. George and his crew as well as some other local shifters were seen going into the restaurant.”

Mitch nodded. “That’s not that unusual.” Their restaurant was a local watering hole and popular among their kind.

Lizzy reached for Craig’s fork, but he brushed her hand away before she could flick his half-eaten omelet all over the kitchen. “Right. Well we didn’t capture any of them going up in the elevators, so whoever did it must have used the back stairs. The cameras on Hunter’s floor weren’t any help either. Whoever was there that afternoon knew all of the blind spots in our security system.”

“So we’ve got nothing and we’re back at square one.” Hunter sighed and poked at his eggs glumly.

“Not quite, by avoiding detection completely, they just gave themselves away,” said Mitch as he walked over to the stove. Craig had left the plate with his omelet in the oven so it wouldn’t be cold by the time he came downstairs.
