Chapter Thirty-Two

Gabrielle

The lack of noise is what wakes me.

There’s no shouting, no hustle and bustle of the dungeon as it bursts into life to eke out another day. Just peaceful quiet.

My eyes blink open, seeing gauzy white above me instead of the stained green sheet of my tent.

There’s movement to my left, and I turn my head on the soft pillow, taking in the sight of the alpha leaning against my bed, his head slumped slightly to the side as deep breathing breaks into the silence.

My heart constricts as I realize my fingers are still gripped gently in his hand, held firmly against his chest. His heartbeat pulses under my palm.

He stayed. All night.

My eyes burn, and I blink the tears away as I take him in.

There’s a brief glimpse of memory, and I cringe as I realize what they must’ve heard from me last night. The darkness of the hole threatens to swallow me up again, and I take a deep, shuddery breath.

Axel’s fingers close against mine.

“Little spoon?”

Turning my head, I give him a watery smile. “Good morning.”

“Mornin’.” His green eyes peer into mine, his face sleepy and rumpled. “How’d you sleep?”

“Fine,” I whisper. “Better when you were here.”

He winces. “Stupid question. Sorry. I’m not good without coffee in the morning.”

Coffee.

He must see my eyes light up, because he offers me an adorable half smile as he unfolds his bulk from the floor, towering up above me.

He seems even taller from this angle.

He holds out a hand to me. “Cade makes really good coffee.”

I take his hand without thinking, letting him pull me out of bed. It’s only when I’m standing before him and he swallows that I realize I’m dressed in a camisole and not much else.

“Ah.” He whirls to face the door, a flush rising up to cover the back of his neck.

Diving across the room, I burrow myself in the safety of his sweatshirt before I slip my hand back into his. Startled, he looks down at me, but entwines his fingers with mine as he leads me out of my room.

“I like that shirt on you.”

His words are slightly gruff, and I smile down at the Alpha Gym sweatshirt. “It’s my favorite, actually.”

His fingers tighten around mine.

The kitchen is quiet when we enter, and I glance around in wonder, taking in the gleaming black marble counters, the overhead brass lamps dropping from driftwood fittings and the vast array of cookware stacked everywhere.

Axel squeezes my hand again before letting go. “This is Hudson’s area,” he tells me, moving around to grab us cups. I watch avidly as he pours delicious smelling black coffee into them from a pot on the side. “We try not to get in his way, but—,”

“But it seems to happen anyway,” a voice deadpans. Hudson’s scent ghosts across my back before his lips press gently to my cheek. “Morning, sweetheart.”

I flush. “Morning.”

My mouth dries as I take him in. Deeply defined muscles ripple along his back as he turns away from me, reaching for a cup in one of the cherry-colored wooden cupboards sitting above the counter.
