Chapter 8

Molly Tells the Truth

Dear Molly,

I feel really terrible. I think I met the owner of the bracelet today. He’s the dad of a girl I play soccer with — Racie.

He said he lost a TENNIS bracelet, so I didn’t think my bracelet was his. But I guess tennis bracelets are diamond bracelets. Rats.

What do we do? I really want to come to your birthday party. But Racie’s dad looked so sad.

Your stealing friend,

Olive

I read the email over and over again. I had a lot of time to read. I was grounded for stealing my mom’s phone. No one had believed that I’d “accidentally” put it in my pocket.

Now Olive and I had one more thing in common: stealing.

I was feeling terrible too. I never really thought about the person who lost the bracelet. Now that he was REAL, well … our plan didn’t seem so great anymore. It felt wrong.

But boy, I sure wanted Olive to come to my birthday party.

Tears fell, and I flopped on the bed, face down, crying into my pillow. I didn’t even hear Mom come in. But I felt her warm hand rubbing my back.

Finally, after I’d cried a river, I sat back and wiped my nose on my sleeve. Mom handed me a tissue. I felt a little better.

“You want to tell me what this is all about?” she asked.

I thought about it. Since I was already grounded, what did I have to lose?

“Mom,” I said, “Olive found a really pretty bracelet. It has tons of diamonds on it. Real ones. We’ve been trying to sell it so she can get a plane ticket and come to my birthday party.” My voice wobbled at the end of the sentence. Tears started up again.
