Chapter Seven

“I think I need to tell him the truth,” Kristen said to Mrs. Romani the next morning as she fed Taylor, and Mrs. Romani held Annie loosely in her arms and polka-danced around the kitchen.

Mrs. Romani stopped dancing. “No. Absolutely no.”

“You didn’t see the way he was looking at me last night.”

“No, I didn’t see the way he was looking at you last night,” Mrs. Romani agreed, grinning. “But I made some powerful guesses in my head.”

“This isn’t funny!” Kristen gasped. “I don’t have a clue what’s going on between us, but I do know it’s not helping the cause.”

“It might not be hurting it, either,” Mrs. Romani suggested, then began to glide around the kitchen with the giggling baby girl in her arms. Dressed in a flowing pink robe and wearing pink spongy curlers, Mrs. Romani looked comical on her own, but holding the bouncing, happy ten-month-old baby and dancing around the kitchen, she looked utterly ridiculous. But Annie was happy. Really happy.

And that struck Kristen in the oddest way.

She hadn’t missed noticing that Grant would go to great lengths to make sure that the children were well cared for, even to the point of making the nanny happy. He tolerated a housekeeper he less than adored, and paid her well because she was very good at what she did, and as far as he was concerned, that was what mattered. As if all that wasn’t enough, he bathed, diapered and fed the children because he didn’t believe in discharging their care completely to strangers. These kids were his duty and he took his responsibilities to the limit, with great results: the triplets were the happiest babies Kristen had ever seen.

As that thought formed, Grant pushed open the swinging door to the kitchen almost exactly the same time the back door opened bringing Evan and Claire with Cody.

Caught, Mrs. Romani froze middance step in front of the stove. Grant crossed his arms on his chest. “Well, now. Isn’t this interesting.”

“I was just holding Annie to keep her from crying while Kristen fed Taylor.”

“You were dancing,” Grant said, as if it were an accusation.

Mrs. Romani glared at him. “I was keeping her from crying.”

“You were playing with her.”

“It’s not a crime,” Evan said, jumping into the conversation.

“No, but she’s tried to make me believe she doesn’t like these kids,” Grant said, pointing his finger at Mrs. Romani as he strode to the stove for coffee. “And I think I finally figured out why.”

Wide-eyed and curious, the other four adults in the room all said, “Why?”

“Because she thinks I’ll dump extra work on her if I know she likes the kids.”

Mrs. Romani glared at him again. “Actually, Grant, it’s because you’re such a nitpicker. I didn’t want the aggravation of getting criticized every time one of the kids hiccuped wrong.”

“I’m not a nitpicker!” Grant gasped.

“You’re a nitpicker,” Evan contradicted.

Grant looked to Kristen for help with his argument but the second their eyes met, the rest of the room disappeared for her.
