Again, sitting by a fire, Merlin chuckled as he gazed in the looking glass on his staff.

“Cray, my feathered friend, it does not get any better than this.”

“Caw,” again was the reply.

“I really should have given you the gift of speech.” Merlin chuckled. He caught a glimpse of another sight in his orb and his smile disappeared. This one was not expected and certainly did not make him happy.

Chapter 12

The girls were rudely awakened by banging on the door. Even in troubled times, Haggis was trying to show some courtesy. He flung the door open after two loud raps. “Sorry to barge in, lasses. Ya need ta ready yerselves and quick. Trouble’s a-comin’.”

“What’s going on?” asked Val.

“Horses. Many of them, comin’ fast. Ya need ta get goin’.”

“Where’s Arthur?” asked Sam.

“He’s gettin’ the horses. Can ya ride?”

“Yes. Val has horses,” said Samantha.

“Out the back with ya then. He’ll be waitin’. Let’s go.”

By the time they put their shoes on and went out the back, Art was walking up with the horses. He had one for each of them.

“No one can saddle faster than you, lad. Now get goin’. We’ll follow along in two days and get the horses from Camelot. If you have to be a day more, losing who’s followin’ ya, don’t ya worry none.”

“Thanks, Haggis,” Art said as he tossed him the bag of money.

“Tha’s not necessary, lad.”

“I know. Just take it for the stable master for the horses. Okay?”

“’Tis covered, lad. Take the money; ya might be needin’ it,” he said as he tossed it back.

Art caught it and gave a nod of thanks. “Ready, girls?”

Nodding, they climbed up on the horses, trying hard not to show they were scared.

“We’ll go through the forest, but we have to go slowly,” he whispered. “The moon isn’t quite full enough to be of much use. Hopefully the horses know their way well enough for now.”

He turned to his friend who was now standing beside his horse. Haggis gave him a sword in its sheath, fitted with a belt strap. “Ya may need this, lad. Take care of yerself and the lasses.”

“I will. Thanks again, Haggis.” Art turned his horse around, leading them on their way.
