Chapter nine

Theo texted me to see if "you guys have anything fun planned tonight."

I called him because my fingers felt too fat and slow to tap out a text when I was also trying to do something else, namely, walk with Elias and do the grocery shopping.

Theo answered right away. "We had the move today," I explained.

"Yeah, I know, I wondered if you're having a moving in party or anything."

Behind me, Elias snorted. "Notice he didn't call until the work was finished."

"Is that Elias?" said Theo on the phone. "Tell him I could never compete with his brawny boy and I wouldn't try."

"What are you talking about, Theo?" I said.

"Ha!" he said. "Anybody but you, Rory! You couldn't play coy if your life depended on it. Anyway, what are you doing tonight?"

"Tell him nothing and he wouldn't be invited if we were," said Elias savagely. I gave him a thoughtful sort of look, mildly disapproving. Sometimes I thought he and Theo were friends, and sometimes they seemed like enemies. Did Elias have a lot of enemies? Was this something I needed to worry about, making peace between him and the various people he was mad at? I hoped not. I'm a peaceful guy. I don't like being in the middle of things.

"We're grocery shopping," I said. "For the week. That's all we're doing."

"Ooh, how domestic! I'll leave you to it, then. Maybe you'll get lucky and christen the place tonight. Ta ta!" He hung up, giggling.

I sighed softly. Putting my phone away, I tried to pick that apart. Theo could be quite snide when he wanted to. He'd definitely been teasing me. Christening, though. I wasn't sure about that. It was something to do with religion and babies. That didn't seem even slightly on the topic of Elias moving in with me. But going by his tone, he'd been saying something naughty that would piss off Elias. I looked at Elias's face to be sure. Yep. He was pissed.

I definitely wasn't going to ask him to explain it. For one thing, he'd probably be surprised I didn't already get it, and I was tired of looking dumb. For another thing, it would just piss him off worse if he had to unpack exactly how much Theo had been trying to get his goat.

We didn't say anything for a while. True to his word, he didn't try to stop me from picking out anything I wanted, although when I stopped at the seafood area and picked up a pack of lobster, and looked at him, he made a low growl sound in his throat. I laughed and put it back. I compromised on some shrimp, though. Shrimp sounded good. It didn't have to be lobster all the way.

I knew I couldn't ask Elias to sleep beside me again, not when he had his own bed here finally and his room mostly set up. It was just that I'd gotten spoiled after only two nights of sleeping well and not having nightmares.

Maybe I wouldn't have a nightmare tonight.
