Raiden
I was completely dumbfounded by Eganâs sudden eagerness, but I did as he asked. I turned my back to him, staring at the door that led to the stairwell that brought us up here. I heard strange crunching and stretching sounds behind me. I was tempted to peek over my shoulder, but I promised Egan I wouldnât look. A growl rumbled behind me and I felt a presence grow. My eyes widened. Was heâ¦
I heard a soft chortle and something bumped my back. I turned around and was face to face with Eganâs dragon. I sucked in a breath as I stared into his glowing ember eyes. I felt a puff of warm air blow over me. I had forgotten how breathtaking the dragon was. Just incredible. I reached my hand out to touch his head, but pulled back, hesitant. Egan pushed his snout into my hand. I rubbed my fingers back and forth across the long scaly snout. He leaned into it, like a dog leans in when you pet just the right spot. I felt my face crack open in a wide smile.
âBy the stars! You are glorious.â A soft rumble rolled through him. It was a pleasing sound.
He crouched down so that I could reach the top of his head. There were five horns that formed a half-moon crown at the top of his head. They were angled backwards away from his face. The middle horn was the shortest, and they gradually got bigger towards the outside. I traced my hand around them and up to the very sharp tip of the horns. He rumbled again. I grinned as I imagined him purring like a cat.
He flattened himself to the ground and opened his wings. I ran my hand across the wings, surprised to find them leathery. I was absolutely mesmerized by the amazing creature before me. Even though I knew it was Egan, my mind had a hard time keeping the two linked as I took in the dragon before me on the castleâs tower. He motioned backwards with his head. I didnât understand what he was trying to tell me. He flapped his wings lightly a couple times, then dropped them to the ground again. He arched his back and lowered back down.
Spines lined the center of his back, with two smaller sets of ridges on either side. The spines were spaced enough apart that I thought I could fit between them. At that thought, my jaw dropped. Is that what he was trying to indicate?
âDo you want me to get on your back?â Surely, thatâs not what he meant, that would be ridiculous. He answered with a nod and a snuff. I was stunned for a moment, paralyzed, but then I felt a buzz of excitement burn through me.
I stepped up to his side, between his wing and back leg. I was trying to figure out the best way to get on without hurting him. I braced a hand on his wing and stepped up onto his massive thigh.
