Josephine had to go to the bathroom.

Admittedly, it was an excuse to get out of socializing with the other Thralls. After Ali had dropped the bombshell of there being even more supernatural creatures, Josephine hadn’t been sure how many more truth bombs she could take.

“Vampires who give out their blood to their humans? That’s a really big deal.” Ali had explained, “In some ways, it’s more impressive than an actual bite. It can get you into some really high end places. It’s like having the keys to the kingdom.”

Eadwulf had said his blood would get her into spaces, but she didn’t think it had been that big of a deal. He hadn’t even made it seem like that big of a deal.

Before Ali could reintroduce her to Neal, she managed to excuse herself to the restrooms. She remembered seeing them near the entrance of the dining room, near the lobby. There were only four stalls, but she quickly fled to the one farthest from the door and locked herself inside. Grimacing at the lack of a toilet seat, Josephine pushed her back into the cold wall of the restroom, and planted one foot against the side of the stall.

Her head was buzzing, still, completely overwhelmed, and gearing to shut down at this point. Josephine felt those same angry tears trying to bubble to the surface, and she stubbornly shoved her hands under her glasses, knocking them to the ground. Uncaring, she pressed hard into her eyelids and took in a deep breath.

You’re fine.

Everything was fine, and it was going to be better. The stress of moving had already been taken care of, she only had a handful of days left at her bakery job, and now she had the tools and resources to do her job just fine.

Why was she so damn upset?

“Excuse me?”

“Oh, sorry. I’ll be right out.” Josephine hurriedly wiped the small tear that escaped, and skimmed the tiled floor but could not see her glasses.

“I don’t need to use the restroom,” the voice called between the slim spaces between the door and stall. It was feminine, young, and kind sounding. “I just wanted to return these glasses?”

Josephine dropped her leg, roughly shook out her clothing, and unlatched the door. A hand holding the simple blue frames extended towards her, and she took them.

“Thank you.” She sniffed.

Now that she could see, the person before her appeared to be no older than Carlos. More of an older teenager, really. Standing just a few inches taller than her in an aline skirt, with tights and a bulky but comfortable-looking turtleneck sweater, was most definitely a teenage girl. She had dark brown hair that was perfectly straight and came down to her shoulders. Green eyes looked warmly into hers.

“You’re welcome.” The teenager said, “I wear contacts, so I know the struggle.”

“I could never wear them.” Josephine confessed, “They bothered my eyes too much.”

“Astigmatism?”

“Something like that,” Josephine lied. She just hated things being too close to her eyes, and by the time her mother mentioned contacts, she had grown too accustomed to her reliable glasses.
