After barely sleeping, Andrew got up early the next day and got ready. He tried extra hard to make his hair look cool and his breath minty fresh. He even used his dad’s mouthwash, which burned so much, it made his eyes water. When he couldn’t wait anymore, he went back to Eve’s house to ask her to walk to school with him.

He felt invincible. This was his day. He owned this day. Sure, things hadn’t gone exactly as he’d pictured them last night, but right before she’d freaked out, she’d said yes to him a dozen ways. And before that… before that they’d had fun, and she’d been kind and real—like her old self. He’d played it back a thousand times in his head, and it got sweeter every time.

Now that he knew what it could really be like to be Eve McNeil’s boyfriend, he was all in.

“Good morning, Andrew,” Eve’s mom said at the door. Somehow it sounded like an apology. “Eve’s not feeling a hundred percent this morning. She might go in to school a little later.”

“Is she okay?” he asked, feeling himself deflating. “Is she sick?”

“She’s fine. Just not feeling great.”

Andrew texted Eve while he walked to school.
