Cortázar, a copy of GarÂcÃa Márquez in tatÂters (InÂnoÂcent Eréndira, the large ediÂtion), The Saragosa ManÂuÂscript, in a stiff, scarÂlet cardÂboard bindÂing, about a meÂtreâs length of The 20th CenÂtury Novel, and much longer and mulÂtiÂhued rows of The LiÂbrary for All and The UniÂverse volÂumes; glossy books in black and white pubÂlished by The LiÂbrary of Art (I inÂstantly spy The WisÂdom of Forms by Sendrail, Brionâs FanÂtasÂtic Art and all sorts of other texts that pratÂtle on about the Gothic style, about ManÂnerÂism, the Baroque, the RoÂcoco and modÂern art, whose oriÂgin can be found in any case in the Gothic, ManÂnerÂist, Baroque, or RoÂcoco styles). The shelf bulges unÂder the weight of the abunÂdantly lacÂquered art books restÂing at an anÂgle, the size of a drawÂing board and smelling of chemÂiÂcals. One volÂume alone faces out. On the cover you can see a kind of wooden trailer with doors wide open amidst a landÂscape of redÂdish buildÂings with archÂways and batÂtleÂments meltÂing into unÂendÂing perÂspecÂtives. It apÂpears to be twiÂlight but not very late. The shadow of a litÂtle girl rolling a hoop lengthÂens out on the macadam. You can see only the spine of the other books, with the paintersâ names in clear white: TinÂtoretto, Guardi, Da Vinci, DeÂgas, Harunobu, PonÂtormo, ManÂtegna. Most of the other shelves are taken up by poÂetry: the striped and dapÂpled colÂlecÂtion of The Most BeauÂtiÂful PoÂems (how well cofÂfee brown goes with Eliot, striÂdent green with AmerÂiÂcan poÂetry, brick with YanÂnis RitÂsos! You couldnât imagÂine it any other way), the OrÂpheus colÂlecÂtion, with covÂers like blotÂting paÂper, ashen blue (here, let us reÂmemÂber the good DyÂlan Thomas â âas I was young and easy unÂder the apÂple boughs ⦠â), fiÂnally the square-shaped yet not lackÂing in aesÂthetic sense PoeÂsis colÂlecÂtion, with the somÂbre black of WalÂlace Stevens and the deep green of RimÂbaud. An enÂtire wall of books, all the way up to the ceilÂing, restÂing on alÂmost inÂvisÂiÂble shelves. A harÂmoÂnious jumÂble, a cosÂmos. Are you a philosoÂpher? Youâll find yourÂself there, in your cream-coloured toga, with an azure blue recÂtanÂgle on the bookâs spine where your name and what you wrote are inÂscribed. An esÂsayÂist? Youâll find yourÂself there, beÂtween PetÂros Haris and CaÂmus, and you will don the black garb. Are you a poÂlitÂiÂcal theÂoÂrist, a nuÂclear exÂpert, biÂolÂoÂgist with someÂwhat origÂiÂnal ideas, soÂciÂolÂoÂgist, anÂthroÂpolÂoÂgist? You beÂlong in ConÂtemÂpoÂrary Ideas. You have the right to choose your colour, from lemon yelÂlow to pansy purÂple. Are you someÂthing unÂdeÂfined, an obÂscure novÂelÂist or perÂhaps an all too well-known pedÂaÂgogue? SepÂaÂrate volÂumes, with all the adÂvanÂtages and disÂadÂvanÂtages. Are you a conÂstrucÂtion enÂgiÂneer, exÂpert in the strength of maÂteÂriÂals, boilÂerÂmaker, mathÂeÂmaÂtiÂcian? We reÂgret, but the lady who lives in this stuÂdio apartÂment will never buy your books.
A miÂnusÂcule stuÂdio apartÂment, sitÂuÂated someÂwhere toÂwards the outÂskirts of the capÂiÂtal. You get there afÂter changÂing a numÂber of buses and then walkÂing along a tanÂgle of narÂrow ashen streets. The walls along the buildÂingâs stairs are painted a pale green and reek of garbage.
