“YOU’RE HURTING HIS feelings,” Shaw said.

Over speakerphone, Jadon kept laughing.

“Fuck you,” North said, massaging his scalp. “And fuck you.”

“I’m on your side!” Shaw said.

“A girl was on his back, tearing hair out?” Jadon burst into fresh laughter. “Does he have a bald spot?”

“You know what, you fucking pretty boy?” North leaned over the phone. “Come over and say that to my face, and I’ll shave your fucking head for you.”

Shaw decided now was a good time to take the call off speakerphone. “Jadon, Jay, don’t listen to him. He’s having a hard day. I really just called for a tiny, teensy, miniscule favor. I got the Cadillac’s plates. Can you run them?”

“No way.”

“Jay—”

“No, don’t do that. Look, I already gave you Phatty. Things are out of control. I’m going to have to send uniformed officers, and you’re going to give a statement.”

Shaw considered North, who was checking himself in the mirror—probably for bald spots—and growling threats against Jadon, of all people. “That might not be the best idea. Right now, I mean.”

“The guy had a gun, drugs, and a knife. He’s an ex-con. It doesn’t matter if you don’t think it’s a good idea; that’s what’s happening.”

“Fine,” Shaw said. He was about to end the call when he remembered. “Did you get any hits on Brianna, by the way?”

“Oh, yeah. Some Branson bigwig raised hell. Bill Dowling. I guess he manages some of the musical theaters down there, wannabe singers, Dolly covers, that kind of thing. He said she stole money from him. A lot of money—close to sixty thousand dollars.”

Shaw tried to keep his voice steady. “Huh.”

“Guess your client is going to have to stand in line; once this girl gets her hands on cash, I don’t think she holds on to it long.”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Stay put; I’ve got patrol on their way.”

“Sure thing, Jay.”

Shaw disconnected and tapped North’s shoulder.

“What did he say about my hair?” North said.

“Oh my God. Start the car; I know where they took her.”

“What?”

“He wants his money back, and she’s going to tell him that Alfie and Buck have it.”

They had the address from the paperwork Buck had filled out, and they drove back into the city. The house was a brick bungalow near Carondelet Park: deep aluminum awnings over the windows, gingerbread trim over the door, ancient yellow drapes blocking the windows. The Cadillac was parked out front. North drove the length of the block, maintaining an even speed, while Shaw took quick glances at the house.

“The door’s open,” Shaw informed North. “This guy, Dowling, he brought muscle with him. One of them is standing there to make sure they don’t get interrupted.”

They turned at the intersection and parked.

“Am I going out on a limb,” North said, “when I say that if this guy isn’t above beating up girls and robbing old men, he probably brought guys with guns?”

“That sounds about right. The responsible thing would be to call Jadon and sit this out.”

“Fuck that.” North frowned. “Damn it; my gun is at home.
