BY THE TIME PETEâS SUPERVISOR had arrived, the parking lot was filled with police cars, an ambulance, and a few civilian cars belonging to two of the producers, the First A.D., and the director himself.
Hollyâs trailer was lit up by spotlights from the squad cars and men and women wearing latex gloves were moving in and out of it in a steady rhythm while blue-suited officers created a perimeter around the entire parking lot.
Pete had called nine-one-one only minutes after leaving the trailer. What else could he do? She was dead, and there was no way he could wait until morning, pretending nothing was wrong. Theyâd find her eventually and then heâd probably be suspect numero uno.
So, heâd come up with a story. The truth ⦠minus a few details.
Iâd been doing a patrol when I heard a noise from the trailers. I went over to check it out, saw the flash of someone diving into the foliage at the edge of the parking lot. I immediately ran toward the point where theâwhatever it had beenâhad vanished into the trees but stopped short when I saw Ms. Pagesâ trailer door open. After calling out and getting no response, I went inside to check if anything had been stolen, trailer thievery being common on movie sets. Once inside, I called out again. I saw then that the bedroom door was open, so I went to the rear of the trailer. Thatâs when I saw her. At first, I tried to wake her, thinking she was drunk. The trailer stank of booze. When I got no response, I turned her over onto her back, saw her eyes were open and knew ⦠I checked for a pulse, got nothing. I then left the trailer and immediately called nine-one-one. Thatâs all I know.
The detectives asked him all the questions heâd known theyâd ask. Questions about describing what he sawâwas it a man? Could he describe him? What was the person wearing? Which way did they run?
A flash of white. Thatâs it. Iâm sorry. Maybe a white t-shirt â¦? I honestly donât know.
The detectives had just nodded, taking notes. Pete was surprised they werenât grilling him harder or trying to make him uncomfortable. He almost felt dismissed from the experience, as if he was someone just passing by and saw something suspicious, rather than a man who had found one of Hollywoodâs biggest female stars dead in her trailer. âCan I ask you ⦠how did she die? I hate to suggest anything, but I noticed the pills in thereâ¦â
The larger of the two detectives put his notepad away, took out a handkerchief, and blew his nose loudly. The other detective, a wiry bald man with intense eyes, answered.
âWe think she was suffocated,â he said abruptly, as if distracted by the question.
Pete nodded, remembering Jimmyâs words. Iâm sorry â¦. She woke up.
âWeâll do all the forensics, and weâll need some things from you,â the larger detective said, tucking away his handkerchief. âAnother statement, your
