The 27-inch man from the planet Etheria, as reported in Point magazine
I now find myself following in my father’s footsteps again. Though it’s fun writing “Humbug,” the rest of the newspaper seems a lost cause, so two friends and I decide to produce our own. We each type up a single page. Joel’s is called The Free Samohi. Jeff, my biking buddy, a transplant from Oregon, wittily names his The Willamette Post-Nasal Drip. I call mine The Daily Sun-Times and Walnut, claiming it’s a Sunday supplement to the Fresno Bee.
Our material is wildly diverse: drawings, free ads, actual phone numbers to call for legal help next to an excerpt from the made-up memoir by Lydia Mayonnaise, fictional White House chef. “Two Southland Students Die in P.E. Action” vents our dislike for P.E. in the somber style of the Los Angeles Times war death announcements. We make copies, staple them, and hand them out to our friends.
The paper is a hit. We’re famous. And infamous. The administration gets a copy and we’re summoned to the first of many meetings with the dean of students. Distributing an unauthorized newspaper on school grounds turns out to be a violation of California’s Education Code. We promise not to do it again.
A promise we break immediately. There’s just too much to say. We settle on The Daily Sun-Times and Walnut and invite others to contribute. Pieces flow in. A sympathetic teacher slips us reams of paper, which we stash in an unused locker we’ve somehow gotten the combination to. In journalism class, where we’re supposed to be working on The Samohi, we’re typing Walnut stories on the big manual typewriters. Years later, our escapades will be transformed into Rob’s pirate radio adventures in Seek.
