Matt sent Josh a message and drove north. It was a long drive to Manchester. It would be tight to sort everything out and get back for the funeral, but heâd do his best.
He had time to think as he cruised up the motorway. Her words sat uneasily in his stomach. When he stopped at a service station, he called her.
âHey. I miss you already.â
âI miss you too.â The smile in her voice made him relax, but she sounded weak, and he ached.
They chatted for a few moments. It would be fine.
In Manchester, the cause of the problems became clear as the diva threw a vase at him when he opened the suite door, the two security guards following him.
She glared, and her rigid body shook.
Matt calmly put his hands up. âIâd like an explanation for why youâve attempted to assault me.â He took a chair, and much as he did in the pub with Oliver, he set it out and sat on it.
âThey wonât leave me alone. None of you will. I want some fucking privacy.â She screeched and neared him.
âSit. Down.â The sharp tone of his voice brooked no argument, and she sat on the bed. âYouâve had two personal assaults within six months. One of whom was stalking you. This is not a light matter. They got to you because your security team were lax in their duties. My men have strict instructions, and you should be grateful that theyâre willing to put up with you.
âThe tour isnât forever. You cannot swan off on your own. Youâve more sense than that, surely. So, Iâll make you a deal. Stop throwing things, grow up, display a modicum of reasonable behaviour, and Iâll recommend an excellent resort for you to visit when youâre done. This place is amazing. I worked a job there for an actor, fantastic, youâll love it.â Matt leant forward with his elbows on his knees, not looking away from her. âThen you can do what you want and put yourself in danger. I donât care, but while my reputation and business is riding on you, youâll do as I fucking say.â
Her face went blank, her eyes staring far away. Like sheâd given up.
With a sigh, he sat back again, crossing his legs. âWhatâs really going on?â
There was a flash of contempt. âLike you donât know.â
âI donât, but I want to.â
She closed her eyes. âAm I supposed to believe you have my interests above your employer?â
âYouâre my employer.â
She sneered. âI didnât pick you.â
No, Trent, her manager, did. Matt tilted his head. âI swear, youâre my priority. What do you need?â
She rubbed her hands together, almost squirming in discomfort.
âTell me.â
She looked at him. âDonât leave me in a room alone with Trent or anyone.â
âDone. In exchange, behave to my guys.â Matt was immovable.
âFine.â
âThank you.â
âAs long as you stay.â
Matt wanted to throw something himself. âI can stay for a short while, but I have other business to attend to.â He checked his watch. âYou need to be already on your way.
