Chapter 32

A few hours earlier

Conner headed for his room, opened his laptop, and searched Facebook for Trevor Gorman. He sensed the guy had lied and knew a lot more about Kaylee than he’d admitted to. Particularly her connection to Ramsden. That relationship was deeply disturbing. A terrible thought hit Conner, landing in his gut like a punch. What if Kaylee had been trying to protect him? The prosecutor might have coerced her into sex by threatening that her brother would spend his life in prison for murder unless she hooked up with him. Was that why he hadn’t been charged with Troy Burton’s death? And why Kaylee had killed Ramsden? To free them both from his grip?

Conner jumped to his feet and paced the small room, taking deep breaths. The cannabis oil in the vape called to him. He desperately needed to calm his anxious nerves. A benzo would be even better, but no doctor would write him a script for one. He sat back down and forced himself to focus. His Facebook search had produced three men named Trevor Gorman who lived in California, with one in La Jolla. That matched Rona’s description of him as “lit with cash.” But Gorman hadn’t shared much personal information and rarely posted. Conner checked Instagram, but Trevor wasn’t listed on that media site. Was he older?

Conner’s phone rang, and he checked the ID. The Roadhouse. They probably wanted him to work, and he needed the money. And a decent burger. What the heck. He answered the call, and as expected, a busboy hadn’t shown up for work. He told Wally he could be there in thirty minutes.

“Where on earth do you live? I need you now.”

“Sorry. I hate being this far out of town, but it’s the only place I’ve got. I’ll leave now.” Conner hung up before Wally told him not to bother. A busboy shift meant he would make tips, and he desperately needed some cash. And a place to stay in town. Driving back and forth was costing him time and gas money.
