It had taken longer than I had expected, by the time it was all said and done. Around and around we had gone, concerns passing themself back and forth from person to person until at last everyone was satisfied. It wasn’t a perfect plan. A lot of it would have to be decided on the fly. But one way or another, we had a chance to stop those troops from attacking the border. Natalin and her master had invested far too much already in Shiina’s war. We owed it to them to deal with this here.

The courtyard was quiet. The others had rolled their eyes as I made to leave, again, but it was right out the godsdamned window. They could babysit me from the comfort of the room, and I could have a minute to clear my head.

Solune’s behavior was confusing to say the least. No matter how I tried, I just couldn’t quite figure out what the Divine was after. He’d pretty clearly gone after Shiina a hundred years ago - and yet, here he was, seemingly oblivious to the history of it all. He’d let me go, rather than killing me when he had the chance. And now his men were helping stop attacks on Efren’s domain? It just didn’t make any sense, no matter how hard I thought about it.

I was occupied enough with my thoughts that I never heard the door close quietly behind me. If the footsteps were audible, crossing the packed dirt of the square, I tuned them out. I was completely unaware that I was no longer alone - right up until she sighed, easing onto the wooden bench beside me.

I blinked, glancing from the corner of my eye. “I thought you left.”

Hanta frowned, making a face as she stared right back. “Me? When would I have found the time for that, in the middle of answering the hundredth question for your friends?”

A chuckle escaped before I could pin it down. “Sorry.”

She grinned, shaking her head. “It’s fine. They’re just so…”

Thoughts of the three ran through my mind. “Colorful?” I offered.

“Oh, I like your word better than mine,” she sighed, casting a glance back towards the narrow window of our room. Even now, Tanian could be seen glaring ominously down at us through the gap. She waved at him, earning a scowl. “They’re good people, though, aren’t they?”

I smiled. “They are. Better than I’ve deserved.” I ran a hand through my hair, shaking my head as I thought about some of the idiotic things we’d done. “They’ve pretty much been pulling me from the fire since the day we met. So give them a bit of slack when they’re….them.”

“I know,” she murmured, leaning back onto her hands. The sky overhead was darkening, the sunset beginning to give way to stars. Her eyes stared up towards the tiny pinpricks of light. “How’d we wind up here?” she said, softly enough that I wasn’t entirely sure I’d heard. I glanced over, but she was still looking at the stars.
