CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
He didnât hand his Macbeth paper in on time. He had a terrible fight with Miss Robards and called her a toad and she sent him to the guidance office again.
Sue Weller was shocked by the way he looked: eyes dark, skin sallow, clothes disheveled, hair in tangles âand so thin. She spent over an hour with him and all he would answer was âYes,â âNo,â âMaybe,â âI donât know.â He sat there blinking, smiling oddly. She called his father again.
The psychiatristâs name was Schlosser. He and Doug Petrie had been in the army together. He was short and heavy with shiny, black, wavy hair, and a mole the size of a raisin graced the bridge of his nose. Jon stared at it as the doctor looked through the papers and said, âDr. Musser found a mild anemia, otherwise your tests were normal. Are you taking the iron tablets?â
âYes,â Jon said, still staring at the mole.
âTheyâll turn your stool black, so donât be concerned.â He smiled.
Jon mumbled, âOkay,â embarrassed. He wondered what Dr. Schlosser had found amusing.
The psychiatrist leaned back, frowning, and said, âJonathan, what do you see as the problem?â
Jon sat with his hands on his knees. He stared at one of them a long time and finally said, âI donât know.â
âWell think for a minute. Things arenât going well at school. Why not?â
âThey pick on me,â Jon said without looking up.
âWho does?â
âA lot of people. But mainly four kids.â
âHow long have they been doing this?â
âThree years. Ever since I moved to Evergreen Row.â
âWhat kinds of things do they do?â
âAll kinds of things. Awful things.â
âSuch as?â
Jon shook his head and said, âI donât want to talk about that.â He looked out the window, out at the buildings, saw himself flying, wished he could be out there.
The psychiatrist rubbed his chin with a hairy hand. He was smiling again. âAll right, we donât have to talk about that. But why do you think they pick on you?â
âBecause Iâm weak,â Jon said. âThey think itâs fun to pick on people who are weak.â
âThey pick on other kids too?â
âA little. But they pick on me the most.â
âHow come?â
âI guess ⦠Iâm weaker than the other kids. Or it must be more fun to pick on me.â Or Iâll do their homework for them, he wanted to say, but he couldnât tell him that. Dr. Schlosser knew his father, and he couldnât tell him anything he didnât want his father to find out.
âSo you think itâs more fun for them to pick on you than it is to pick on other kids.â
âYes.â
âWhy is that?â
âI donât know.â
âCould it be because of the way you respond to their teasing?â
âMaybe so.â
âSo it isnât just them, would you agree?â
Jon looked up, dark eyes squinting. âWhat?â
âIf you learned to respond in a different way, perhaps it wouldnât be so much fun for them anymore.â
Jon continued to squint. He didnât say anything for a while, then said in a soft voice, âMaybe not.â He looked out the window at freedom again.
