Chapter 13

Ophelia

“Ophelia?”

Strong fingers stroked my cheeks, and I woke up with a smile on my face, my lips puckering to kiss my Master’s fingertips.

“I’m awake,” I managed. “I’m here, Master.”

“Ophelia.”

The voice was insistent, forcing me to open my eyes and leave the comfort of my dream. I focused my attention on Kain who was sitting on the bed, his expression worried.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, fear pumping through my veins as my eyes met his. “Did something happen?”

Horrible thoughts filled my mind, but the truth was, as long as Kain was alright and sitting safely next to me, I wasn’t too worried. I just wanted him to be okay – nobody else mattered.

Or at least so I thought until he delivered the news.

“Ophelia, you should come with me,” he said sternly.

“Why?” I sat up straight in the bed. “What happened?”

“Your father,” Kain got out through gritted teeth. “I have reason to believe he has your sister. I think she’s alive and well, but I think your father is keeping her prisoner. Now come with me, we have more to discuss. We’ll have to come up with a plan to get Vlada back safely.”

“Yes,” I said in a rush, getting out of our bed, my heart pounding with worry.

Yet at the same time, I couldn’t help but feel hopeful that maybe I could reunite with my sister. It had been years… Long, long years since I’d last seen her. But I knew our connection had remained the same, knew that she loved me as much as I loved her. A part of me never wanted to accept that she was gone, and I knew then I was right to stay hopeful. Soon, she would be returned to me, and things would go back to normal.

But the thought of telling Kain the truth scared me. He still didn’t know I’d met with my father, that I knew he was perfectly alright and ready to strike me where it hurt most, by hurting my man.

I followed Kain into his office with my heart beating faster than ever. There, I sat opposite his desk and he fanned out some papers on the desk for me to go over.

“Here are some receipts,” he started. “And some work our PI has done. Look at these pictures, Ophelia. They were taken by a security camera at a playground not far from here. Do they look familiar?”

He pushed a stack of photos toward me, and my heartrate picked up even more as I started going through them. They were blurry and not the best quality, and it was hard to make out the person in them. But still, my heart told me it was who Kain suspected.

There was a little girl in the photos, probably about seven years old. I couldn’t make out her face clearly, but she was accompanied by a tall, blurry figure of a man quite a few decades her senior.

I didn’t need any more information to know what I was looking at. It was my little sister, Vladislava, and our father.
