Chapter Twelve

Robyn and I were in a jubilant mood when we entered The Dolphin. She seemed almost ready to pounce on me again, right there in the foyer by the toilets.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe we did that,” she said, a mischievous grin plastered across her face. “I can’t believe I did that. My god, if he’d caught us, I’d have been sacked. Maybe even disbarred.”

“Yeah, but we didn’t get caught, and now we’ve got all of his dirty little secrets – at least as far as this case is concerned.”

She took my hands in hers and then kissed me. “You are a bad influence, Jack Carlton.”

“Yeah, because you never did anything illegal or immoral before you met me.”

“It’s true!” She grinned. “I was a paragon of virtue before you corrupted me.”

Hand in hand, we pushed the doors open and stepped into the pub.

“Well, well,” boomed a scornful voice from the bar, “if it isn’t Robbin Cunt and her pet fuckin’ eejit.”

I looked up and found Chris and Billie sitting on bar stools, glaring at us both. Billie shook her head in disgust and turned her back.

Shit.

“Hey, guys. Look, it’s not what you think.”

“Oh, so yeh haven’t been playing hide the sausage with the thieving bitch then?”

This wasn’t going to plan. “No, I mean, she’s not the person we thought she was.”

“Oh, do tell,” Chris snarked. “She’s undercover, is she? Working for a secret governmental agency, yeah? Keeping you skint for your own good so you don’t die of cirrhosis? Very charitable!”

“Well, she did… I mean, yeah, that happened, but we’ve worked it out.”

Chris glugged his pint and waved to Jean behind the bar to replace it. “Fuck’s sake. I’m hardly one to lecture a bloke about thinking with the little head instead o’ the big ’un, but there are limits, pal. Even yer evil ex would be better than this toxic slag.”

Robyn pulled her hand free from mine, mortified. “I think it would be better if I left,” she said quietly.

“Aye, off ye fuck, love. Try not te drug anyone on the way out, eh?”

I grabbed Robyn’s wrist before she could leave. “No, Robyn, you stay. We came here to celebrate, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Go and grab a table. I’ll get the drinks in. Please.” I turned to Chris and gave him a hard stare. He glared right back at me, eyes bright with hurt and defiance. I sighed and clapped him on the shoulder. “Listen, mate, I appreciate your concern, but you need to back off. She’s here because I invited her. I’m working this case with her, and she just helped me get crucial evidence from the Shart. This could make all the difference. If you can’t be happy for me, feel free to stay out of my way.”

Billie turned to face me, eyes pained. “Jack, you can’t blame Chris for being worried about you. That… woman hasn’t exactly had your best interests at heart. We don’t want to see you getting stitched up again.
