Chapter Fourteen

Mallory

“You’re a real bastard, you know that?” Denise glared at Mallory over the operating table, wrist deep in a boxer’s abdominal cavity.

“For what now?” Mallory brought a pair of clamps in and pinched off an artery, then focused his light, his gloves crinkling the saran wrap that he kept everything in for sanitation.

“You know what for.” Trevor added, glancing up from the incision to stare at Mallory.

Mallory glanced up and locked eyes with her before pulling out half of a mangled remote control to a DVD player and placing it in a pan beside her.

“That vampire… You left him there confused! I went to the club myself when I knew he’d not been around for a while. Unless he’s got a pup in his hands, he’s dead on his feet.” Denise held out the pan while Mallory deposited a handful of bits of chewed plastic.

“My fox says it’s not time and I have to trust my fox. He’s too tempting.” Mallory plucked a surgical stapler off a tray full of utensils.

“At least text him or something!” Trevor snapped and worked a secondary incision with sutures, making the complex knots look easy.

Mallory sealed off the incisions and made quick work of the closures. The stapler clicked with damning finality with each clip. “I did text him. He hasn’t responded. I told him I was sorry!” Mallory stepped back and let Trevor finish the last sutures, disposing of his gloves and gown in the contaminated bin while Denise worked cleanup.

“Hey, asshole.” Trevor helped Denise to move the boxer into a recovery kennel and finished cleanup while Mallory checked his phone. Still nothing.

He’d messaged Nick the moment he got home after the pups were born. I’m sorry. It’d been read, but he never responded.

“What?” Mallory snapped.

“Christ almighty…” Trevor rubbed his face anxiously. “Tonight’s full moon, right?” Trevor furrowed his brow.

“Yeah. We’re welcoming the pups into the pack.”

Trevor scowled. “You find Nick and you apologize. Do you hear me?” Trevor wagged a bloody scalpel in his face. “And I’d fucking claim him if I were you. You’re mates and any idiot can see it. You’ve hurt him so bad I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned you down.”

“I couldn’t claim him… I just… My fox… He can’t…”

Trevor hung his head and growled before dropping the scalpel into a pan with a clang. He shucked his gloves and gown before storming out, going through the clinic to the back stairs to go up into Mallory’s apartment. He came back down a minute later with an envelope and stuffed it into Mallory’s hands. “Took them for fucking ever, but here. Open it when you feel like it. It’s your omega’s DNA tests.”

Mallory swallowed and plucked at the seal for a second before thinking better of it and shoving it in his pocket.

“Chicken?” Trevor sneered.

“It’s not my place! I’ll give it to him tonight.”

Trevor shook his head. “I’ll join you. All the alphas there are sweet, so it’ll be a splendid opportunity to run.” Mallory shrugged and washed his hands once more before grabbing his keys and leaving.
