The narrative of this novel was complicated by its setting in Nicaragua and the United States over the span of two decades more than three decades ago. A number of people helped to verify locations and events: Harry Strachan, Alice Pfeiffer, and Jonathan and Lyana Drewry in Nicaragua and Julie Lellis and Bill Blanchard at Elon College. Luz Helen Robinson and Richard and Lonna Harkrader provided information about coffee production in Central America. A book about Nicaraguan birds published by Timothy Sedgwick-Jell as a teenager was often consulted. Shanee Yvette Murrain located citations for several religious references at the Duke Divinity School Library.

Joel Sanders edited this book, as he did my previous book, and brought greater clarity, fewer contradictions, and an improved tone to its final draft. My wife, Rilla, proofread several drafts and was especially helpful with suggestions about Spanish usage. The image of the author on the book cover by my photographer daughter makes me look better than I deserve. The Writers’ Group at Fearrington Village, North Carolina, listened patiently and offered helpful advice at gatherings for more than two years as portions of the narrative were read.

A great debt of gratitude is owed to Richard (Rick) Mills who graciously provided the painting for the cover, as he did for my previous novella and short story collection.

Finally, all of my books were published only through the kind and thoughtful encouragement of Randall Williams and the staff of NewSouth Books in keeping with their high standards of print and design.
