Langston

It wasn’t exactly cold outside. This was California, after all, but there was a slight nip in the air, so I rubbed my hands up and down my arms as we stood out on the patio. I smiled when Crew took his sports jacket off and draped it over my shoulders. The damn thing was so huge it swallowed me. I looked up at him, at his muscular arms bulging through his dress shirt and the rest of his body that was the definition of fine. He was shorter than Lucky, maybe five-nine, but he was still taller than my five-five. And he was so, so handsome, dressed impeccably every day of the week, and shit, I wanted him so bad. I’d wanted him from the second I laid eyes on him, way before me and Lucky broke up.

“To answer your question, no. I don’t still love him. To be honest, we’d grown apart and probably would’ve split long ago had Baldwin not surprised us. I definitely didn’t see a pregnancy coming,” I admitted.

“So, she wasn’t planned?”

“Not at all, but I adore her, and I feel privileged to be her mother. Lucky loves her too, so I’m sure she’s why we both stayed in the relationship as long as we did.”

“I see.”

“Crew, do you really like me? Like, for real? I’m pretty sober now, so I can handle the truth, Litigator.”

Smiling, he said, “Yes, I really do. Like, for real.”

“I like you, too, and not just because you like to eat pussy.”

He laughed. “Well, I’m glad to hear that. You don’t think I’m a lame?”

“No, Crew Shabazz, Attorney at Law. I think you’re a damn catch, and any woman who thinks you’re a lame needs to be lobotomized.”

Paisley stumbled through the patio doors, lipstick smeared, hair all over her head. “There you are! Firsh of all,” she slurred, “I’m so glad you two are together. You really…um…match! You’re both so browwwwn!”

Wow.

“And second, Langston, you jush won a priiiize!” she finished.

“I did!” I trilled. I’d never won one of the New Year’s prizes.

“Yyyyesh!” Paisley confirmed.

Handing Crew his jacket, I raced back into the house, into the living room, and squealed when Gilly handed me my prize—a five thousand-dollar check. “Thank you!” I yelled, quickly finding Crew, who’d followed me inside, and hugging him. “I won something, Crew!”

Smiling, he said, “You sure did!”

And then we stared at one another, still in each other’s arms, and I swear everyone in the room disappeared as Crew’s face moved closer to mine. My heart sped up and my lips twitched, eager to meet his until a voice said, “Congratulations, Ladasha!”

Bitch-ass Troy Danvers.

“I’m ready to go now?” I whispered to Crew.

“I’m waaaay past ready,” Crew replied. “Danvers is about to get me fired for kicking his ass.”

“And our last prize, a weeklong Mediterranean cruise, goes to Crew Shabazz!”

“What?!” Crew shouted

I took that opportunity to kiss him. Just a quick peck, but it was a nice peck. “Congratulations, Crew!”

“Oh, I wuzzzzz hoping you choo would get together!” the CEO said.
