CHAPTER 6

We went around the building to go to the back side. As Andy had predicted, there was a small entrance. The massive sliding door had a little window with accumulated dust obscuring the sight.

The door was locked, but I looked inside through the window, anyway. I was looking for a ghost, and the lack of sight wasn’t much of a drawback with my search. Still, the storage didn’t seem to be used as often as I’d expected. Instead of items reminding me of basketball, there was stuff like thick mats that seemed to be unused for a long while. As for Jess, I couldn’t feel any signs of a ghostly presence.

“Hmm… she’s not here, I guess,” Andy commented. “And, it looks like the Normans aren’t using the storage with the gymnasium. In retrospect, there isn’t a lot of large equipment used to play basketball.”

“How about the goal posts?” I looked at him.

“I don’t know, but they seemed to be fixated on the wall.”

“Oh… I see. Then again, what did she use to polish?” I regretted my disinterest in not just basketball, but all the sports in general.

“Like, the balls?” Andy suggested.

“Where do they stock them?” I looked up at him, growing desperate, having found practically no clues since coming to this school.

“Well… let me see…” Crossing his arms and closing his eyes, Andy thought for a while. “Hey, how about the clubhouse? We haven’t checked there, right?” He snapped his fingers, opening his eyes.

“Ah-ha!” My eyes widened. “The clubhouse was a big blind spot for me. I was too preoccupied with the whole gymnasium given to the club thingie.”

“I know. I was talking about the clubhouse while walking in the junior high area, but it completely slipped my mind. I guess we were both too traumatized by the encounter with him.”

“I have a feeling that Jess should be at the clubhouse. Let’s go look for her!” I was so excited that I could barely stop from running.

We hurried along the way back to the area behind the school building. On the grounds, boys in soccer uniforms were chasing a black and white ball. As Andy had mentioned, the fields ran smaller compared to other parts of the school, and with the soccer team playing a game, there wasn’t much space left. Probably, multiple sports teams were sharing the grounds with time slots, as boys in baseball uniforms were stretching at the side of the field.

“This is the building used as a clubhouse.” Andy stopped in front of a long, one-story concrete building.

It was divvied up in many small compartments, and each one had a door with a name plate with the team name. Despite all the dazzles and glitters I kept on seeing at this school, the no-frills building in front of us was unbelievably ordinary—almost resembling the one at the high school I’d graduated from—a local public school in Napa Valley.

“Let’s go find the Normans’ room,” I said.

“Sure.”

Starting from the nearest compartment, we moved as we checked the name plates on the door.
