Chapter 9

RENEE PEERED OUT THE window before opening the front door, safety consciousness now as automatic as fastening her seatbelt. The three-hundred-watt bulb lit up the porch, the front yard and the sheriff’s Cherokee in her driveway, but it was the man at the door that captured and held her attention.

She’d spoken to him briefly when he’d called to say the children had arrived safely at the hospital and were receiving the best of care. She knew he’d been swamped with reports to file and families to notify, but he’d taken the time to call and make sure she was okay. The gesture warmed her in a way she was afraid to think about.

As he stood on the porch with his hands tucked into his front pants pockets, she could see the tension around his eyes and bracketing his mouth. Long seconds passed slowly as they stared at each other without speaking a word.

She felt suddenly vulnerable standing there in only a cotton sleep shirt, though it covered everything that needed to be covered. She need not have worried; his gaze hadn’t dropped below her chin. After all the man had seen her naked once and asked her to put her clothes back on. She didn’t need a brick to fall on her head.

“Are the children still doing okay?” she said without moving.

“Just checked again. They’re all doing better.”

Relief shot through her like a double dose of epinephrine and she let out a huge sigh. “That’s great.”

So, it wasn’t the condition of the children that brought him here at this hour. Maybe he’d had to reverse his decision and disclose her name to the media. Even if he hadn’t, it wouldn’t take a Pulitzer-winning journalist to track down her identity if they wanted to. She’d been thinking about that as she’d gotten ready for bed. Her days in Shadow Mountain might already be numbered.

Her chest tightened at the thought. Her feelings for Nick had grown so fast. She didn’t know if there would ever be a chance for anything serious to develop between them. She only knew she’d regret it forever if she didn’t take the chance.

“I saw you on TV tonight. Thank you for not mentioning my name.” She hesitated only on moment. “Why didn’t you?”

His gaze bored into hers as he took a step closer. “That’s what I came to find out.”

Any sane woman would have taken a step back.

She stood her ground.

Uncompromising determination gleamed in his ebony eyes. “There’s something I have to do first.”

He reached for her chin and tipped it up as he lowered his head. His mouth covered hers in a kiss that skipped right over sweet, leaped to fiery hot and charged quickly on to explosive. He seduced her with only the touch of his lips and the gentle coaxing play of his tongue.

Not sure if she trusted her legs to support her, she reached for his neck and clung to him. She wanted the kiss to go on forever and fortunately for her he seemed in no hurry to end it.
