SHOOTING STAR

The Liderc demon’s head came clean off and landed on the floor, but the body was still dancing around like ... well ... a chicken with its head cut off. Lyn chased after the headless cock and stabbed it through the back. No sooner had Channing’s tip come out the other end when the Liderc exploded in a mess of black feathers and ichor.

“Sweet Jesus,” said Clint.

Lyn looked at him. Her bestie sat on top of his chest, water bottle in hand, looking a little bit like a porno version of Annie Wilkes from Misery. Clint looked at Angie too, then his eyes rolled back and he went limp against the pillows.

“Oh shit.” Her B.F.F. set the water bottle on the nightstand then pressed two fingers against Clint’s neck.

Lyn’s stomach dropped into her toes. “Please tell me he’s alive.”

Angie swept her long hair aside and then leaned one ear close to Clint’s mouth.

“Ang?” Lyn pleaded.

“He’s breathing,” said Angie. “He’s okay.”

Lyn pressed one hand to her chest and wilted against the bedroom wall in relief.

Then Dobby appeared. Or at least she thought it was Dobby. The Kimaris demon didn’t have her sock. The creature hopped onto the foot of the bed and a flashback of Shawn Petty sprung to mind, lurching Lyn into action. She tightened her grip on Channing and marched up to the Kimaris. “Oh no you don’t!”

“What’s going on?” asked Angie.

“Kimaris demon. Right behind you. Don’t move.” Lyn raised her sword, ready to deliver a swift blow to the goat, when a bolt of bright silver light flashed just outside the singular window, turning the world white. Lyn squinted as the glass shattered and sprayed across the floor. The brightness dimmed just as quickly, returning to the normal mid-afternoon amount.

“What the heck was that?” Angie pushed away from the bed and went toward the window.

“Careful,” said Lyn. “Glass.”

Angie paused before she reached the crystal-like shards sticking to the carpet pile. Then a loud bang shook the house, and a bolt of yellowish-pink sparks shot through the air.

Lyn’s vision tunneled. She watched the shot come straight at her, this golf-ball sized blaze of shimmer and fire that sliced through the air like a bullet. Instinct squeezed her fingers hard around Channing’s pommel as she angled the blade to use the broad side of the sword as a shield, not even knowing if the steal was strong enough to withstand the bolt. Just before the hit struck home, the Kimaris demon jumped straight up, into the line of fire.

The bolt entered the demon’s shoulder. It released a small cry of pain as the inertia pushed its body over the edge of the bed. The Kimaris landed at Lyn’s feet, dead.

Angie rushed to her side. “Are you okay? What just happened?”

Lyn crouched on her heels. “The Kimaris demon. It ... it took a bullet for me.” She scanned the body. The point of entry left a nasty third-degree burn on the demon’s shoulder that was quickly spreading. Threads of bright
