In the 21st century, the brain represents one of the key topics for scientific research. Incredible amounts of resources and efforts are dedicated towards understanding the main functions of this organ. Unfortunately, the brain remains an extremely complex organs and we have developed all but a very rudimentary understanding of it and its function. Even the processes and behaviors of an individual neuron are extremely complex.

As always, where scientists fail to discover engineers step in to make approximations. In other words, engineers studied neural models and simplified them to obtain a realistic and above all feasible structure they could implement into computers – Neural Networks were born.

Engineers replaced many of the biological and chemical processes inside the brain with mathematical functions, which can easily be modelled inside a computer. Nevertheless, engineers decided to keep the same terminology as used in the field of neuroscience: the artificial neuron will hence be the focus of our next chapter.
