Chapter 21

The mayor left us shortly after our entrance stating he had to get back to his office. Billy left us after getting our residence location and saying he would drop by tomorrow to discuss what our roles would be in the HOVDF.

It seemed like no time at all before we made it to the house we had been given. I was surprised that we were given land and a house honestly. My only hunch was that the mayor was giving gifts to win our favor. I mean, we were about 10 levels higher with our classes. Combat classes, that is. I wanted to investigate these other classes. If we each picked something up that could benefit our group, we could hopefully stop getting stuck in life-or-death situations.

But for now, we entered the house, though I left my Bear and Cougar outside, each to one side of the door. They were set to lay down and do nothing. I didn’t want to take a chance of someone attacking one and getting themselves killed before I could stop it. That Bear minion is a bad ass.

We found that there were three bedrooms, each with their own bed, and one bathroom, though it didn’t look like they had plumbing working any longer. We’d have to figure that out, but we were ok for now. Someone must have been here before us as when we got to the kitchen, we saw three apples and some cooked steaks, probably from some monsters. There was also three one-gallon plastic jugs filled with water.

It was paradise compared to what we had been through. We all ate our fill, with plenty left for breakfast tomorrow, Julie putting the leftovers in her inventory to keep it from spoiling. It seemed that even if humanity did get technology working again, no one would have any need for refrigerators. Our inventories keep things in the state they were put in, which meant meat and other perishables don’t decompose or degrade at all while stored.

After we finished eating, we noticed that the sun had almost finished setting. We all went to our rooms, which we each had claimed earlier, and went to sleep.

I woke to the sounds of people talking quietly in another room. The sun had risen already, so I knew Rob had to be up. I assumed Julie must be up as well as it sounded like her voice mixed with his. I got up and headed out to the kitchen where I found them talking.

Julie noticed me first and said with a smile, “Good morning, Shalryn!”

“Morning,” I replied sleepily. “How did you guys sleep? I feel rested for the first time in what feels like forever.”

“I slept like a rock,” Rob said.

“Unlikely,” I replied, “Rocks don’t snore, and you do. Though I’m sure you have plenty of rocks in your head.”

“Aren’t you just the jokiest jokester this morning,” Rob replied.

Julie was just smiling at our sibling banter. “You guys want breakfast? We still have plenty of leftovers from yesterday,” she said.
