Kane
Voices.
Whispers.
Darkness.
Kane willed his senses to focus, summoned his consciousness to the surface, fighting through the murky depths of oblivion to return to himself.
What had happened? Where was he?
âKane?â a soft voice drifted through his awakening mind. âKane, itâs alright. Youâre back in the garden,â It said, the voice reminiscent of Elder Ozen.
âOzen?â Kane forced his mouth to reply, his tongue feeling as though it was made of stone. âWhat happened?â Slowly, Kane wrenched his eyelids open, a glare of white light shone overhead. Encircled round him were many of his friends: Ozen, Deme, even Syphon.
âThe beast, it attacked you,â Ozen explained. âItâs a wonder you survived!â
Memories rose to the surface then, followed by concern. âMezza? Slater?â he inquired hurriedly.
âThey are fine,â Ozen answered. âLetâs get you up now.â
Several helping hands took him by the arms and gently set him upright. His head swam and eyes blurred. Whatever that creature was that was stalking the halls of Legion could offer one heck of beating. He nodded his thanks to Syphon and Deme, after which they took their leave to allow Kane time to recover and speak with Ozen.
Suddenly recalling his mission to retrieve the book from the library to help the banshee princess, he asked, âThe book? Sorcia?â
Ozen only smiled, replying, âCome, see for yourself.â
Intrigued, Kane followed the elder on unsteady legs to the back of the garden. Upon parting the jade fronds acting as a veil, Kaneâs eyes widened.
âWhatâ¦â he uttered, unsure if what he was seeing was supposed to be good or not.
Sorcia lay upon her back, her skin jellylike in texture, oozing and running with some kind of clear, viscous liquid. Kane suppressed a disgusted look. The once beautiful banshee had been reduced to a gelatinous blob.
But Ozen only grinned at the confused prince, which seemed a very odd reaction indeed, all things considering. Kane gave him an inquisitive stare, wondering if the old demon had lost what remained of his ancient mind.
Finally, holding up the Encyclopedia of the Races, Ozen explained, âPrincess Sorcia appears to be in a sort ofâ¦quickening.â
Kane shook his head, offering the elder a bewildered expression. âMeaning?â
The elder frowned, apparently searching for the right words. âSheâs changing. Transforming, if you will.â
Kane glanced over at the large globule that used to be a beautiful princess. Though wary of the answer, he asked, âWhat will she be?â
âAccording to the book,â Ozen tapped the cover of the encyclopedia with the talon on his pointer finger, âSheâs undergoing a birthing process of sorts. The book referred to it as mitosis. The metamorphosis of daughter cells, really amazing, simply fascinatingâ¦â he rambled on.
Frustration building, Kane narrowed his gaze at his mentor. âPlease, explain in simple terms.â
The corners of Elder Ozenâs lips lifted. âSheâs giving birth by splitting into two.â Kane scrunched up his face, picturing Sorcia in two halves. Ozen elaborated, âThere will be two of her, identical twins. Apparently,â he chuckled, âbanshees have the most remarkable reproductive system. Of course, we never knew of this, given we were not privy to knowledge of this race over the last few centuries.
