EARLY the next morning, the Sphinx’s crash course in superhero basic training began. But on the other side of town, another superhero was quickly running out of time.

“Okay, Casanova.” Captain Amazing heaved a heroic sigh. He had to admit, events had not turned out exactly as he’d planned. But surely something good could still come out of all this— something that would breathe life back into his career. And the chains holding him to the wall weren’t all that comfortable. “You’ve had your little fun. Let’s do a deal here,” he told Casanova.

The villain turned to his companions, Anabel Leek and Tony Pompadour, and shared a gloating smile. “A deal," Casanova laughed. “He wants to do a deal.”

“How flattering,” said Anabel sweetly.

“You and I would make ... a great team,” Captain Amazing went on, trying to sound more optimistic than desperate.

“A team . . . hmm.” Casanova stroked his chin. He was enjoying this bit of groveling even more than he’d thought he would.

“Picture this,” said Captain Amazing in his best commercial voice. “Good and evil, together for the first time.” He flashed an eager, blindingly white grin. “We’ll do a chain of restaurants—Planet Superhero. And we’ll go bass fishing together on the Sports Channel.” He waited for Casanova to respond.

“Sounds great, Lancey,” Casanova began.

Captain Amazing smiled triumphantly.

“There’s just one problem. Tomorrow night’s my birthday party—and you’re gonna be the cake!” Casanova began to laugh a long, deep, evil laugh.

Captain Amazing’s smile faded. “Wh-What?” he stammered.

Casanova spun Anabel in a quick disco twirl. “It’s gonna be quite a party! And when it’s over,” he added, beaming, “Champion City—or what’s left of it—is gonna belong to me! See ya!”

Captain Amazing slumped in his chains as Casanova let out another devilish chuckle and turned to walk away.

“Casanova, wait,” Captain Amazing called out after him. “Hear me out! We could do a talk show together—like those two guys! From the right, I’m Captain Amazing. From the wrong, I’m Mr. Casanova!” He tugged desperately against his steel shackles. “You’ll never get away with this.”

But Casanova kept walking. He had better things to do than listen to a chained-up has- been.

“Did you find those losers yet?” he asked Tony Pompadour. N

The thug cocked his head and shrugged.

“Chill out, Boss,” he said coolly. “They’re nobody. They’re nothin’.”

Casanova stopped dead in his tracks. He shoved Pompadour against the wall. “That’s what you said about Amazing twenty years ago, and look how he got me put away!”
