Chapter 10
UPPING THE ANTE
Bliiinnnng. . . Bliiinnnng . . . âHello,â Quanda said, answering the telephone.
âWhere the hell you been? Iâve been calling your phone all day and all night,â Ms. Brenda reprimanded her daughter.
âOh, wassup Ma? Um . . . I was with Chantel,â Quanda said, quickly covering her ass.
âWell, have you spoken to Myra lately?â Ms. Brenda asked, calming down.
âYesterday. Why?â Quanda asked tentatively.
âYou need to go see her soon. I just heard that they found Vidal and Jamaica her crack head friend dead with their throats slashed over in Brownsville Houses,â Ms. Brenda reported.
âWhat?!â Quanda yelled, knowing that she would be the person to break the news to Myra. She also knew who had ordered their murders.
âGo see Myra and let her know,â Ms. Brenda instructed, softening her tone. She hated to think about how Myra would take the news.
âAiight,â Quanda replied, sadness in her voice.
Quanda was a firm believer in karma. She didnât care so much that Vidal had died the way that she did; after all the shit that she had put Myra through, she deserved it. Quanda was, however, not looking forward to telling her best friend that her mother had died. Even though Myra had suffered some horrific things at the hands of her mother, Quanda knew that deep down Myra still loved her mother and hoped that one day she would get better.
Quanda pulled back the huge down comforter on Knowledgeâs California king size bed. She stepped onto the expensive Italian marble floor, wincing at the chill it sent to her feet. She went to the bathroom, pushed up the gold-plated faucet handle and hung her head over the HERS sink, splashing water on her face. She looked up at herself in the large mirror that was brightly illuminated by the huge vanity lights above it. âDammit,â she sighed. She realized that she had a long day ahead of her.
When Quanda returned to the bedroom she saw a note on the night stand that Knowledge had left. WENT TO TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS. BE READY AT 9. WEAR SOMETHING SEXY. She crumbled the paper. She would have to call him and cancel their plans for tonight. He was supposed to be taking her to Peter Lugerâs Steak House. He said that he wanted to talk to her about some things. Damn this could have been my key to getting inside! Fuck itâI have to be there for my girl, Quanda said to herself. Quanda picked up her cell phone and dialed Miltonâs house. The phone just rang. âThis chick never answers the damn phone. If I was dying, sheâd be the last person Iâd call,â Quanda said out loud. She got dressed and called Knowledge just before she headed out.
âYo,â he answered.
âHi baby,â she said, so convincing with her fake love that she sometimes started to believe it.
âHey,â he replied, softening his tone.
âI gotta cancel for tonight,â she said, sounding remorseful.
âWhy? What up?â he asked, disappointed. He had become addicted to sex with Quanda.
