Work sucked on Monday for Ethan. Everyone who didn’t attend his brother’s wedding was peppy and full of energy from having the week off, while he was still fucked up from the time change and not getting enough sleep. After work, he stopped and picked up the ingredients he needed for his dinner with Piper. Even though he had zero energy to cook a big meal, he was sure she’d have less. She worked long shifts and her job was more demanding than his.

Once the food was finally in the oven, Ethan took a soda out of the refrigerator and sat on the couch to wait for her to arrive. He started flipping through the channels and noticed there wasn’t much on. At seven forty-five the timer went off. He took dinner from the oven and kept it covered on the stove to stay warm. There was a knock on the door around eight.

He jumped from his spot on the couch and opened the door to see a very lovely, but very exhausted looking, Piper. “I’m sorry I’m late.” Her eyes looked like she was having a hard time keeping them open.

“No, don’t worry about it. Is everything okay?”

“Yes, it’s fine. I got stuck doing a bunch of paperwork and didn’t end up leaving when I wanted to.” She took a few steps inside and inhaled deeply. It seemed to perk her up a little. “Something smells really good.”

“I hope you like Italian.”

“I do.” She sat her purse on the small table he had near the front door and walked into the living room. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

He smiled genuinely. It made his day to see her. “Nope. Have a seat at the table and I’ll bring everything to you.”

Going into the kitchen, he scooped a few stuffed shells out of the casserole dish onto a plate. He added garlic bread and picked up a large bowl of salad with tongs inside. Both were set in front of her.

“This looks very good.”

“I hope it tastes good.”

He asked her what she would like to drink and what kind of salad dressing she used. Sitting across from her, he had the perfect view of her beautiful face. “Thank you for having dinner with me tonight.”

“Thank you for cooking it for me.” She took a bite of the shells and moaned. “So damn good.”

“Don’t start moaning. You know what that does to me.”

She smiled. “How did you learn to make this?”

“It’s a recipe passed down from my grandmother, to my mother, then to me. It’s usually only me eating, so I don’t make it often.”

“Well, you did a great job.”

“Thank you,” he replied.

The more she ate, the more energetic she became, but he wondered how long that would last. After dinner, he wouldn’t keep her long. She needed sleep.

“Do you work tomorrow?” he asked.

“Yeah. I work tomorrow and Wednesday then get the remainder of the week off. The three days I’m on are hard, but having four days off is nice.
