I knew that the thing Désirée loved most in the world at that point was money. I was already paying her and Monique £10,000 a day, so it wasn’t like she shouldn’t be grateful, and she was. But I thought, in my own stupid way, that if I showed her how much money we were making in bitcoin she would become even more grateful and maybe, just maybe, see me in a more romantic light. Stupid? Incredibly so, but what can I tell you? I was desperate and that makes a person do crazy, idiotic things. Or so I’m told.

But I was not to be deterred by such mundane concerns like good sense. So I took it upon myself to educate Désirée and Monique in all things crypto. The problem was, I didn’t know what the fuck I was talking about and they were completely uninterested in listening to me drone on about Bitcoin. I won’t bore you with the details – suffice it to say that my plan went sideways pretty quickly.

“What is going on with you, Dillon?” Désirée said after one particularly frustrating discussion. “Why do you keep talking about this?” I looked at her and sighed.

“Because I’m an idiot?”

“No, not so much,” she said gently, which for Désirée was unusual. She was a complete hardass with the other whores we employed, mostly because that’s how you have to be with employees but also because that’s who she was. But at least with me, she was trying to be nice. “I think there is something else going on with you.”

“I’m not sure how I fit into this,” I said with a look at the commotion around me. There were four other girls in the living room of my old apartment at that point. We were still having the new place painted and cleaned so we were stuck for the moment. Désirée seemed to sense how lost I was, a first for her. She sat down and took my hands in hers.

“Dillon,” she began. “I want you to be happy. What can I do to make you happy?”

“I’m not sure,” I said honestly. How could I tell the girlfriend of the woman I loved that I was kind of jealous of her? That I knew she would always be the most important person in Monique’s life? That her very existence was the reason I wasn’t happy anymore, and there wasn’t anything I could do about it?

“Do you need to go away with Monique?” she asked, which surprised me. A lot.

“Is that an option?” I knew Monique had a full appointment book and rescheduling her regulars would be a huge hassle. But Désirée didn’t hesitate.

“I will make it happen,” she said simply. Monique was entertaining one of her regulars at that moment so we couldn’t talk to her about this new plan, but Désirée made me feel like if that’s what it was going to take to pull me out of my funk that she would move heaven and earth to make it happen.
