Chapter Twenty-Three

Evan

I shifted on my feet and plucked the tight fabric in my crotch area. The fifth time my legs had gone numb and I had to move.

“You owe me big time,” Jake said beside me. “And stop fidgeting. You look cute.”

I wanted to punch Jake’s lights out or at least stab him with my ridiculous plastic sword. “Whose idea was this again?”

“Uh, yours.”

I glared at Jake.

“I just suggested costumes. I think mine is badass.”

His was badass because you couldn’t even recognize him. He wore leather like a glove and a white wig that fell down his forehead. One red eye and a cool-ass skeletal mask that covered his good eye. “Who are you again?”

“Dude, Kaneki Ken. Tokyo Ghoul. Get your shit straight.”

I tugged at my crotch again. I had decided to take Sasha’s advice and go as Eren Jaeger, Noah’s favorite anime character, which had me wearing white tights, a tan tight t-shirt, a brown leather jacket that did not reach my waist, and knee-high boots. And this guy was a fighter? Yeah, right. I could hardly move. At least all I had to do was tie my long hair in a bun and not wear makeup or a mask. I included the harness straps, two around each thigh, that at least led the eye away from my private parts.

The pains I suffered for love.

I shook my head.

Too late to turn back now. We’d driven the four hours to this place on our motorcycles, and I had purchased the VIP tags from Jake’s uncle, who was a US contributor to the magazine that sponsored this event. In other words, Jake had the hook-up so that Noah et al. could enjoy the luxuries of backstage passes and special VIP section. Something they still didn’t know they had because I had this bright idea to surprise him and crash the party.

I caught sight of Miguel first. The guys wore what looked like a bad shrinkage of a school uniform while Harper looked not like Harper. She had pink hair, horns, and wore a very short red dress.

It seemed to be the racking theme at this event. Fantasy color hair, short tight dresses for the girls, and dorky outfits for the guys. Sasha wore a small dress, too, with long pink hair. She was holding onto Noah, who wore a long coat with white stripes. Kirito. That’s what Sasha said he’d dressed as. They were a couple. I had to wonder if that was some sort of hidden agenda on Noah’s part. Going as a couple with a girl.

Get a grip. Not many guy-on-guy couples even in anime.

Suddenly, doubt creeped in. Maybe I should’ve asked Noah if it was okay, rather than storm his party. Maybe he didn’t want me here watching over him while he weeb’d out. Shit. Too late.

Jake sighed.

When I didn’t move, he said, “Fine” and started forward.

Just as I left the safety of my wall, I noticed the girls gawking our way. At six-four and one-ninety pounds of muscles I’d tortured myself for, I did not look like Eren Jaeger.
