Chapter 14 FOOTPRINTS ON THE TRAIL
Early the next morning, Cormack spotted something hat looked like tracks on the trail. At a glance, I saw that they were Miâkmaw moccasin tracks, heading east. Knowing full well that Cormack didnât know the difference between Miâkmaq or Montagnais or Beothuk moccasin tracks, I made a show of looking at the tracks and determining, for Cormackâs sake, that those tracks were not Beothuk but Miâkmaq. To further satisfy Cormack, I told him they were going away from us.
Despite the fact that we had been on Miâkmaw territory for some time now, I felt that Beothuk people were keeping a close eye on our journey to the west. That night, I decided that whenever possible, I would go over hills or lookouts to see if I could spot the Beothuk so that I could warn them. I was sure in my own mind that we were being observed on our journey westward.
After making camp that night and having our meagre supper of fried bread and tea, I built up the fire and made Cormack comfortable. Once he was sound asleep in his blankets, I knew I could slip away and climb the nearest hill to see if I could see any sign of Beothuk people and their fire. Since it was a beautiful moonlit night, I was able to easily pick my way to the top of the hill. To my amazement, I could see many tracks of Beothuk people, as if they had been watching us make camp in the evening. It was obvious that the Beothuk were watching our westward journey, but they were no longer in sight.
This became my nightly routine: making camp near a lookout and slipping off into the darkness for signs of my Beothuk brothers and sisters. I was pleased to know they were keeping a close eye as we made our way across the land to the western coast.
