CHAPTER 5

Violet

Wyatt grabs six cookies, stacking them in his hand and shoving one in his mouth. “These are good. Did Della bake these?” He’s all decked out for the evening’s event in town in a black cashmere sweater, dark jeans, and his fancy black boots with a silver decorated tip.

It’s expected that we’ll be dressed to the nines to represent the family. I’m wearing a form-fitting sweater dress, thigh high boots with tights, and a thick scarf to keep the mountain winds at bay.

“No, our cook did not make those. I did.”

Wyatt snorts. “Right. Like you’d ever bake.” He cackles like the ravens that circle our house on cold winter nights.

Wyatt’s Father’s right-hand man. The one who, if he’s lucky or unlucky, depending on how someone looks at it, will take over when Jameson Briggs decides he’s done barking orders and running the empire. Wyatt’s the middle child but something about him gives him the oldest vibe to me. Then there are my two other brothers– Colt, the sheriff and actual oldest, and Beau, the youngest. And I’m the baby. The oops that came twelve years after Colt.

Speak of the devil.

Colt strolls into the industrial kitchen that’s all stainless steel and granite, far too cold for my tastes, and takes off his black cowboy hat. I don’t understand how his hat stays spotless. It’s like dirt runs from him.

Like a woman once did.

She wasn’t the one for him, but Father made the relationship happen to enrich the family empire. Thankfully, the woman saw through her lust fog and hightailed it out of Storm Canyon. That’s one thing my family is good at— chasing people away.

Colt steps next to me. “So I hear that you were at the five-and-dime this morning.”

“Are we living in the nineteenth century?” I roll my eyes. “It’s the Winchester General Store.”

“You know we don’t speak that name in this house, sweetheart,” Father says as he kisses my temple, surprising me. The man has the footsteps of a butterfly, and the sting of a bee. “Glad to see you’re okay. You gave me and your brothers quite the fright. Good thing Colt found you. Can’t imagine what I’d do without my little peanut. I’ll have a new car coming up from Denver tomorrow for you.”

When my father says the endearment and his declarations of his actions, they only remind me of my status as the lesser Briggs and how under the all-powerful thumb I really am.

I rearrange cookies mindlessly. “But it’s the truth. The Winchesters own the general store and I think they deserve to be acknowledged for it.”

My father’s eyes narrow almost imperceptibly, but as a Briggs child the daggers for talking back, even at my age, dig into my bones.

“You’ve been away to that big city too long, Violet. Glad you’re here to get back to your roots. Now go get changed for this evening. Something to impress. Who knows maybe there’s a man out there for you this holiday?”

Colt snickers and I give him the death glare.
