Chapter 14

Lucas felt good after his chance encounter with Madison. The rift in their friendship had been affecting him more than he realised. Now he felt as if a great weight had been lifted off his shoulders and he was looking forward to the next time that she and Jai came up.

But that didn’t help him to process his feelings for her. He could admit it now: she was special to him and not just in a friendly way. He wanted more than that but there were so many obstacles that he couldn’t see anything changing. The biggest one was Madison herself. She had moved away and appeared to be in a relationship with another man. That said she saw him only as a friend.

Then there was the memory of Greg. Would it dishonour his friendship with Greg to fall in love with Greg’s wife? Greg had been gone for over three years now ... but would it ever be appropriate? The questions rolled around in his mind and made him feel uneasy even though he was glad that their friendship was back on track. He decided he needed to do something to take his mind off it. After all, he couldn’t change anything.

“Hey, Ryan,” Lucas said as his friend picked up the phone.

“Lucas! What’s up?”

“You up for a camping trip? Boys only?”

“Always. Where are we going?”

“How about that private campground we went to at Lower Creek a couple of years ago?”

“Yeah, that one was a beauty. We can take the kayaks and try some fishing.”

“Sounds good to me. I’ve got next weekend off so that works for me if it does for everyone else.”

“Suits me. Want me to call the others?”

“OK. Let me know who’s coming.”

“Shall do.”

Lucas was looking forward to the camping trip. The boys hadn’t gone camping for a while and it was high time they had an adventure.

The road followed the river then wound up into the mountains as it made its way across the Great Dividing Range. It grew narrower as it climbed and Lucas lost sight of the river as he drove through thick clouds of dust kicked up by Ryan’s vehicle. Behind them, Carl, Vaughn and Steve choked in the dust. Lucas was always on high alert driving the narrow road. It wasn’t uncommon to encounter trucks or other vehicles coming the other way. Sometimes there were cows on the road or rocks fell from high above. It wasn’t a drive for the faint-hearted.

But it was well worth the effort. Lucas felt his spirits lifting as soon as they reached the private campground on the river. He knew that they would have a fantastic weekend and he was looking forward to kicking back and relaxing.

“Enjoy it, boys,” the caretaker said, handing Lucas the gate key. “You’ve got the place all to yourselves this weekend.”

“Have there been any frosts yet?” asked Ryan, who had walked up while Lucas was talking to the caretaker.

“Yes, a couple of small ones. It’s been cold at night. Hope you’re well prepared.
