Nicky congratulated me and asked if I’d taught Emmy the dance that she did.

‘No, she made it up herself,’ I said and I stuffed my sister’s sweatshirt over her head to get her dressed more quickly, because I was getting a bit embarrassed at all the attention and I wanted to get out of the changing room as quickly as possible.

‘Mrs Miller wants to see Mum before we go,’ I said. ‘She probably wants to complain about you. You know you were supposed to sit quietly on a chair.’

‘Mrs Miller didn’t say I should’ve sat quietly on a chair,’ said Emmy, stubbornly. ‘She said I was a very good dancer.’

When we came out of the changing room, there was the usual noisy crowd of grown ups, all waiting to pick someone up. We pushed our way through to Mum. I was bursting to tell her what Emmy had done in the lesson. So was Emmy. She was dying to boast about how marvellous she’d been. But I wanted Mum to see Mrs Miller first. Did Mrs Miller want to complain about Emmy? Or did she want to tell Mum I was going to be the star of the show? I couldn’t wait to find out.
