Chapter 6

Island Fever

Women and Children First

Molokai is a virgin island, very lush, and not as populated as the rest of the Hawaiian islands. We thought that we could find a new place to live and set up our lives our way. I envisioned a quiet lifestyle and warm weather beneath a tropical sun surrounded by waterfalls and rainbows. A place that we could call home.

Yahowah did not go to Molokai, just the women and children, and some of the men. Yahowah was still at The Father House. Starman stayed behind too to help get The Source Restaurant ready to sell.

We all flew in at different intervals from LA to Oahu, where we would all congregate and wait for each other’s flights to come in. In Oahu airport, as we waited for hours, all day, for everyone else to arrive, lots of the moms like me were whipping out boobs to nurse babies and infants. People would stare at us, but we weren’t shy in the least about nursing—anywhere, anytime. From Oahu we took Aloha Airlines, one of the smaller airlines, to Molokai. There were only two different flights there per day. By the time we got there, it was later in the day, but still light out.

We drove into Molokai in a caravan of rented vans (not the blue and white vans from LA) and we made our way through the town. This island looked very different from the other islands. My initial impression was that it was like driving through a third-world country. It was primitive and I didn’t see any tourists there. We were aware that the island was recently the location of a leper colony, which was slightly unsettling.

It was only the local Hawaiians that seemed to live on this island. Houses looked like funky shacks and old cars were strewn about everywhere parked on lawns. Stray dogs were wandering around. I was blown away. The Hawaiians were just hanging out on their porches, staring at us and wondering who we were.

Where the heck were we going? I was once again unaware of the logistics of how the elders found us a place to live, and was praying, with complete faith, that it would be a good decision. I seriously didn’t have to worry about anything.

We drove about an hour from the airport to our destination. Once we got outside of the town, we could see the lush landscape and gorgeous waterfalls as we cruised up the coast. At last we came to a big house (don’t know whose house) across the street from the beach. It was a two-story house with a big lawn out front, and it had plenty of room for all (fifty?) of us. Everybody found their own space and we slept on the floor. We each had a cardboard box with our belongings.

Taking care of our babies was the most important job. Much of this involved washing diapers. In Molokai, we didn’t have any washing machines, so it was a constant chore to clean our dozen cloth diapers that we each had.
