The affective realm of music education refers to one’s preferences, tastes, and values in music. Music educators expect to influence their students’ taste and values, and they can learn strategies to do that. Some studies have found the following results:

Musical taste can be influenced by several sources, including aspects of the music such as its complexity, meaning and performance quality, but also by family, peer groups, media, musical training, personality, gender, and maturity (LeBlanc 1980).

Increased familiarity with a musical selection breeds preference for it up to a critical point, at which time repeated hearings of the selection breed increased dislike of that music. This is called an inverted-U function (Hargreaves 1986).

Likewise, increased complexity breeds preference for a musical selection up to a point, at which time repeated hearings breed increased dislike of the music due to an overload of information (Hargreaves 1986).
