Dr. Yates stood over the body of Elise Stone, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. In a tin pan between her bare legs lay two globs, still covered in blood, but recognizable as something that resembled stillborn puppies with tiny human arms. They had been dead when he removed them from the girl and dropped them into the pan.

The girl had not been dead then. She hadn’t died until several hours later, as the doctor stood over her, soaking up the blood from his operation with a towel. There was a chance he could have saved her, but he refused to try.

“Why would I save you?” he asked the corpse. “So you could go back and try again to breed with them? You’re better off dead. The world is better off that you’re dead.”

Dr. Yates continued to study the naked body before him. How many doctors have had the opportunity to fully examine the body of a woman who has copulated with werewolves?

The doctor wiped his hands and opened his office door. The parents of the girl had gone home for a while, thinking she was still alive but sleeping. Dr. Yates stepped onto his sidewalk and found a young boy loitering nearby. He tossed the youth a nickel and told him to fetch the schoolteacher.

“Tell him to wear work clothes,” Dr. Yates said. “I have some things I need his help moving.”
