It was almost dark outside when the service began. Every window in the church held three candles and there were candles blazing everywhere. The front of the sanctuary was decked out with autumn colored flowers. The church looked warm and homey. Tim and Jason were waiting at the altar with Mary Bailey, who had on a festive clergy stole of white and gold.

Monica had a simple formal-cut gown of light blue with a matching hat. As man-of-honor I walked her down the aisle and passed her off to Jason. Tim and I stepped to one side. I’m not easily moved, but the service was lovely, and two very important people in my life were getting married. I admit that I shed tear or two.

It all seemed to happen quickly and before I knew it we were all heading down to the parish hall for the reception. Monica’s two sons, Jeremy and Joshua, moved up the reception line to meet me. Though Monica and I were close growing up, we had rarely corresponded as young adults, so I hadn’t seen the boys since they were babies.

“It’s nice to finally meet you Uncle Jesse,” said Jeremy. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“It’s good to meet you too,” I said. I didn’t point out that we were really second cousins, since it didn’t much matter.

“Uncle Jesse, we heard all the stories of you and mom growing up in a family that talked to ghosts,” babbled Joshua when he met me. “It sounds really cool!” I really had a hard time telling them apart.

“So,” I said to both of them, “what do you think of Jason?”

“I think they’re great together, just look at them over there!” said one of them.

“She looks very happy, doesn’t she?” asked the other one. I had to admit they both looked very happy. Just them Tim walked by with a plate of food.

“Great spread! I like the meatballs,” he said.

“Actually they’re veggie balls,” I replied.

I grabbed some food and circulated around the room before sitting down at the head table with Tim and the newlyweds. Fortunately we skipped the speeches and toasts and simply ate and chatted. It was very informal and comfortable. Monica and Jason did cut the cake and there was a photographer discretely running around, but all and all it was enjoyable and relaxing.

“By the way,” said Tim as he leaned over to me, “keep the tuxedo on until I get home.” I was about to ask him why, but when I saw the look in his eye, I figured out why,

“No problem,” I answered.
